(Home) Buying, choice of models

I have been looking to buy a Townace for a couple of months, I recently saw one advertised as 'Super Extra'. It stated that it was a Japanese import, does any of you more knowledgeable 'townies' have any info on what 'super extra' consists of. Incidentally it also states it is petrol............ any ideas on fuel consumption would also be very appreciated.(I have read the fuel cons. based on the TD's etc)

Darren,
They will all be imports, unfortunately TOYOTA in their infinite wisdom didn't bring the Townie to the UK, we just got the rather low key Spacecruiser, good vehicle, but a little lacking in the equipment stakes, when compared with the Townace. As regards spec., you can fins a 'Super Extra' with all or none of the following, it seems to depend what the Japanese customer ordered. Dual Air Con, Auto or Manual, Petrol ot Diesel, Hot & Cold Box, Electric Curtains, Electric Mirrors, Electric Windows, Remote Locking (Late Models Only), 4x4 or 2WD, 8 seats or 7+small folding seat or 7 seats, TV, electric moonrooves or 6x Skylights (4 opening). Other specs seem to exist as well. There are also two sizes of the vehicle, with the Lite Ace being slightly smaller in dimensions, but appearing to have similar options to Townaces. Have a look at the main site & at ACE ANSWERS (Link above) to see about spec & tips for new & potential owners. Look for sensible mileages, check if speedo has been changed to MPH or not, also check if UK spec changes have been done (Fog light etc) and general condition. Also get a good coat of underseal/waxoyl applied as they don't put much on in Japan as they don't salt their roads, so corrsion isn't a problem over there. As regard fuel consuption, I get 25-30 MPG from my Diesel/Auto/4x4, I suspect that the petrol ones would be slightly jucier, but not far different, manual models might be slightly more frugal, but are quite rare. Hope these comments help, regards Rob. - (#2268) Rob Drinkwater, 18 Feb 02

A couple of people have hinted to me that 2.0EFIs are a bit thirsty, maybe 25mpg if yer lucky, more like 20 round town or if you like racing Galaxies.
I think Super Extra is just a bit of Jap babble to make it sound good, like Rob says the specs are a bewildering jumble. Best model version name I've seen is a LiteAce "Super Casual". Belongs to a friend of mine who's a single lady, so she never cleans it ! - (#2272) SteveFE, 19 Feb 02

Dear Daz,
We have a Townace super extra for sale if you are still looking.
It will be available end of may when our new bigger
Hiace is arriving from Japan.

I recently bought a townace (I think). Well I pick it up in a 10 days time. Awaiting registration etc at the mo. Can anybody tell me what the different models are and how to identify which on I bought the dealer just had it down as 2.0 Ltr Turbo Diesel Townace, which was good enough for me, Now I find there are different variants. So what are the different models and how do you tell, I've looked on the BoK and ACE answers but I'm still unsure. Is there a potted history somewhere you know like you get in the Haynes first few pages, Which tells what the models are when they were introduced etc.

Im really looking forward to picking up the Townie. My current car is a BMW so this is going to be a very different, but fun, experience. I also own a BMW bike with sidecar attached.

Mine field, could be any spec really, although the Townace normally only come in two models, ROYAL LOUNGe or SUPER EXTRA, some others have cropped up, if you look on the main site you'll see some of the items that may or may not be fitted on your particular vehicle, just depends what the original purchaser in Japan decided to go for. HTH Rob.
