(Home) Fuel consumption & 2wd/4wd (Sp+)

hi
I havejust brought a Townace (89) and I am getting about 30-31 mpg. Its a 2ltr diesel auto and I was wondering if this is the normal mpg?
Ihave to say that I think the site is great and hopefully wont need the advice on repairs to often. - (#2669) ian ricklesford, 8 Apr 02

Seems reasonable to me. Certainly more than I get with mine.

Ian. I seem to get 30/32 consistently with my Masterace 2lt diesel although, on a couple of long motorway runs (Auto Box)and keeping my speed to 55/60. I have got 35 mpg. If your figure is an overall one, for a mix of journeys, ie, short and long, that is not too bad. - (#2689) John Davis, 8 Apr 02

Seems fairly good to me, I get 28-30Mpg normally, although we did drop to 26Mpg on a recent trip to Wales from London, fully loaded, six up, Air Con on, and doing 120-160 Kph most of the M4, so still can't complain, with the 'breeze block' aerodynamics I think that 26Mpg isn't too bad at that speed. P.S. the brakes do work well even at that speed. HTH Regards Rob. - (#2691) Rob Drinkwater, 8 Apr 02

your doing well mate i only get arround 25 mile to the gallon

Just reading through all the above comments & couldn't resist a 'black-cat'. For all you fuel sapping 4x4 auto merchants, my two wheel drive manual TD masterace easily does 35-40 mpg whithout trying! And i can better that with economical driving - sorry, couldn't resist it.

Happy motoring,

Tony.

You may not feel so smug if we get a bad spell of weather come next winter. 2WDs are crap on snow and ice

- (#3190) Ian Dunse, 30 May 02

ok Ian, i can live with that, doesn't snow that much on the coast.
Wouldn't like to have a v.expensive 4x4 system or auto box go 'Pete Tong' on me though.
Each to their own.

Ian, 2WDs may be crap on snow and ice but have you ever driven a Sierra on a dodgy road? After that nothing's scary. I hit a hedge at 30mph (3 kids up) in my old rustbucket after what I can only assume was a little bit of mud on a very gentle bend made me get all crossed up. I had a look back after it and there was nothing there that would have bothered the Townie. I've never had any wheelspin or brake locking out of mine at all (too gutless?).

Steve

I can only comment on the Spacecruiser as I haven't had a 2WD Townace but it was that bad that at times I couldn't even get up my own drive if wet leaves or a bit of snow. Admittedly it is a bit steep with a bend in it but a real pain and embarrassing when I did get stuck. Even worse when it happened to the Missus cos I never heard the end of it!.. That's why I persisted in looking for a 4WD Townie. I've even been stuck with this on the drive, have had to get out lock wheels etc.

Also found the Space to be scary when on ice. Plenty of hills around here and the 4WD has got me out of no end of scrapes. Overall even though I complain about the extra running costs of 4WD, its worth the extra.

Chaps each to his own.
I drove a Space Cruiser for 12 years, as soon as you get a twitch from the rear it's time to go slow, sorry even slower, and ask yourself is this trip needed? I have lived in S England all that time so may not have faced bad spells of snow, perhaps that is where the 4WD comes into it's own. Only having snow for a total of 2 weeks over the last 5 years a 4WD was not an option for me. Note the Ace Jam pictures mainly S of England owners not a 4WD in sight.

Town ace super extra 2wd td. I have owned this vehicle for around 6mths and find it very good on fuel, around 40-50 to the gallon with town driving.
I'd like to say< I thought I was the only one out there with the town ace until the other day visiting this site. The insurance section was very helpfull.

John, hate to put a dampener on things, but you do realise that the milometer is in kilometers...?

kick down is slow any ideas out there thanks gav 4wd verses 2wd after much discussion with mecanics i had to opt for 4wd i am glad i did much moe stable and safer as i have youg children .had to use my master ace to pull my transit out of the grog the other day to my wifes and works amusement thumbs down for 2wd though great if like geeting stuck on camp sites. one minus point my ma4wd is quite bouant(bouncy)under load ? though hardish ride shocks maybe thanks gav

theres a few things you can do to improve the mpg
disable the egr valve
fit an electric fan
get the injection side of things set up perfectly
increase the tyre pressures to 42psi
drive below 2500 rpm
