(Home) High temp gauge reading (Sp+)

can anybody shed any light on this problem please? the temp gauge needle rises to just under the red and goes no further whatever you ask the vehicle to do but does not boil up. it has gradually made its way up to this point over 3-4 months and has got no worse and no better since reaching this level. have replaced thermostat, rad cap, temp sender, radiator. tested thermo fan, checked water pump changed transmission oil and tried second gauge. last week had head off, reground valves new gaskets etc.and put back together to absolutly no effect. could it possibly be a very small crack internally in the head that can't be seen thats causing it? as i can't think of anything else it could possibly be now. the annoying thing is it runs sweet as a nut. its driving me mad. even toyota dealer is puzzled and can offer no extra clues. its a 2.0 auto 3y.

Bernie,
Faulty wiring could cause these symptoms, especialy a bad earth somewhere. Try cleaning all associated connections including the fuse connections. You may even need to replace the wires.
Also, have you any method of testing the true water temperature when at this high reading? It should become obvious if the true water temperature is excessive or not.

How's the fuel guage? I'm not sure if the Spacecruiser has a voltage regulator on the instrument panel, but if it does, and it's duff, that would be the expected result
