Very nasty grinding/grating noise from steering when wheel is turned.

Checked power steering fluid and found it foamed to a sort of brown mousy consistancy probably aeriated.

Let it settle and topped up with fresh fluid and noise reduced for a while but then returned. It seems worse when cold.

I would very much appreciate any advice

The PS fluid should be red - mine was brown and I had strange noises occasionally from the pump. I changed the fluid in mine and it cured it. Drain the reservoir and rack and refill with dexron ATF; may well cure your problem (unless the pump's knackered).
It may be worth changing the fluid, running for a week or two and then changing it again to get all the crap out (I did this with my Townie's autobox to get it clean).
