(Home) 4WD and gearbox

Can anyone help? without sounding too stupid where do you put gear oil into the gearbox I have looked but cannot see where to top it up.

I have had problems getting my newly acquired 4wd townie into 4wd I managed it once but it wont play again, it is 10pm and I have just come in from looking underneath and have seen a lot of oil on the front quarter of the prop shaft for the front axle and over the bell housing. I know a small amount of oil can look like a lot but it does seem a lot, so i need to top it up, the wife went from Southampton to Crawley and back again with no probs. Could my problem be with the 4wd unit or could the gearbox be on the way out.

any ideas thought and prayers would be gratefully accepted on this subject.

Manual or auto? If it's auto, an overfill or overheat will blow out through the dipstick tube, soaking that area.
