Upon ring around and searching the web one company wanted a Cat 1 fitted and was about £263 it would cost about £300 to have fitted. However many have suggested Frizzell(Liverpool Victoria) this I did
and over the phone signed and charged me full comp NCB and mentioned excess only £100 no mentioned of thatchams Cost £169:00
Got cert and cover this morning.even could pay by monthly installments!

Wow!
That sounds too good to be true, especially when Liverpool Victoria regularly change their minds about whether they will insure Townies or not. You did emphasise the fact that the Townace is a Jap import and they haven't based the figure on a SpaceCruiser?

Ian

Save some of that sunshine for w/e 26/27th !

I recently phoned Liverpool Victoria for a quote and was impressed when I said "Townace" they said "would that be a Royal Lounge, sir" and went on to explain that LV think Toyota's helpful policy on "import" spares price and availability avoids the need to load the insurance or insist on an immobiliser. I'm switching to LV next month. Premium £224 f/comp including use in connection with business, age 52, other car and house also insured with LV.

Bugger! I have to wait until January to renew. It's looking like I can do better than £293 with Direct Line if I go with LV. Thanks guys!

Pity they don't do Northern Ireland

- (#2883) David Miller, 10 May 02

Is this the search for the Holy Grail ? ( no disrespect intended )
I’m amazed at the difference in quotes depending on whether your UK mainland or NI / Ulster.
Many insurance companies advertise their services and then bracket ( excluding Northern Ireland ) Others cover NI but their premiums are extortionate. Some won’t touch you if you’ve had an accident even if it’s not your fault! ( Quinns )

Can I argue this is discrimination and take it to the European court – probably not. I’m sure its entrenched in the poor political situation here. ( However lets keep politics off this site. ) I use the example only to express my frustration.

Privilage Direct won’t cover!
Cathcarts – now Open and Direct won’t answer the phone!
Insure direct won’t cover NI!
First Rate Direct won’t cover Jap (Grey) Imports ( or men as far as I know!).
Co-op – No Imports.
AXA- No imports in NI.
NFU – No imports.
SureQuote – No imports.

Others won’t cover you unless you have an existing policy with them!

Barry quotes a premium of £169 with Frizelles. When I checked them for a quote ( 43 Insured and spouse ( 40+ ), full no claims, for a Lite Ace, They responded with £757-10.

Adrian Flux said he did’nt cover NI. ( yet he is an associate for Norwich Union )

Phoned Norwich Union. “ Do you provide cover for Jap Imported vehicles in NI”. “Yes sir we do. But you must go through a Broker as we do not give direct Quotations. Sorry we can’t recommend any one Broker you have to phone around”

Where’s my crystal ball ?

Next Broker I called

Can you quote for insurance through Norwich Union. “ Yes sir we can”
Can you provide cover for a Jap import through Norwich Union
“ No sir we don’t cover Jap imports!
But Norwich union said - -- - - - -
“ Sorry sir we don’t cover Jap Imports”

Next Broker eventually phoned Norwich Union for clarification and I am awaiting a response.

Rapidly approaching the additional premium this year will be saved in telephone calls if I stop now.

I Don’t mind paying a fair price for insurance. But I paid £550 ( because I thought I was stuck with no time to shop around ) last year and it went up to £780 this year for no meaningful reason!

Somewhere in the threads I remember someone suggesting that it would be a good idea to approach an insurance company to set up a dedicated, specialist insurance for these vehicles. In the interest of all in NI I’m inclined to agree.

It would be interesting if fictitious quotes were obtained from some of you mainland drivers for a vehicle to be permanently driven in Ni for at least a year and see what the premium is,if of course you could get cover!

My Townie's insured with Footman James - £315 fully comp Insured & spouse to drive no alarm requirements; they were the cheapest I could find. Their website is www.footmanjames.co.uk. Certainly worth giving them a ring for a quote IMO.

- (#2889) Rob L., 10 May 02

i visited my tsb bank and got a quote through them for £300 this was under written by churchil insurance..full no claims and claim protected....worth a try..there no alarm fitted and parked on road overnight....ring tsb and ask for the free phone no.

- (#2893) granty33, 11 May 02

Thanks for all your advise. But despite following all of it up, I could not do better than my renewal quote of £780. The insurance companies either do not cover NI or they hike up the prices because its for NI.
Anyone in NI that can do better, please advise so I can plan for next year.

Hi to all out there......I only found your site tonight and wish that I had found it 2 years ago................Well here goes, we pay £106.29 "per month". Now that's what I call extortion.I have full no claims, I've never had an accident, never even had a parking ticket. I've been driving for 18 years and have a clean license. My insurance is with norwich union through the AA. They were the only compant that I could find to insure me.....that was 2 years ago. My insurance in due for renewal in Aug. I have an immobiliser fitted ( as it was a condition of my insurance).PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, get in touch if you can let me know of a better deal ( if not a MUCH better deal)............Thanx.

- (#3092) Andy, 23 May 02

Hello Andy. Try Frizzell on 01202 752007. They recognise Townace & Masterace vehicles. Good prices, reasonable excess and well established. I'm insured with them....

- (#3093) Ray Ambler, 23 May 02

Ray's right. I had Townace insurance on NU Minibus Plus policy at £860 !!! (Mad). Phoned Frizzell (Liverpool Victoria) and got fully comp. with no unusual restrcitions for £297. That's more like it. Documents arrived very next day. I'm happy and would recommend Frizzell to anyone looking for Townace insurance.

Had renewal come through today from Admiral insurance and they wanted £377 full comp/protected NCD/£100 excess/8000miles per year.

Another convert to Frizzell here...excellent service. granty33 strange that Churchill underwrite the Lloyds TSB policy as they told me they don't cover import vehicles.....

- (#3908) Dave Freer, 21 Jul 02

Just changed mine for a 1990 royal lounge me 51 wife 47 comprehensive 6 years no claims from Norwich Union £370 on monthly buget.
Frizzells with my traffic points for going over road works red lights (could not find a colour i liked) ie 3 points was £214 plus £10 for monthly buget direct debit. Home is in somerset. Hard standing at night. No immobiliser needed. Also i told them about this site and if anyone else is interested in using Frizzell /LV email me first and you and myself will get a extra bonus.I will tell you how. Policy throught 2 days later all ok. Hope this helps. Phil
- (#3931) phil cook, 22 Jul 02

I found Frizzell was the only company that could give me a realistic quote when I got my Townie. I got a 65% no claims discount from some old insurance I had years ago! (other companies would not take it into account due to the time gap) They also knocked off about £50 from the premium when I added my dad to the policy! I've just renewed at £471 and although I informed them of 3 points (SP30) they said that would not affect the premium. They are also fully aware of the vehicle type, the schedule says "TOYOTA Towace (Import)" and there was no requirement for any sort of alarm, let alone Thatcham.

Hi
Saw that someone from NI was not insured by the National Farmers Union - I am insured by NFU in the UK - mail me and I will give you their number to see if you can get sorted through the UK agent. As far as I can remember these guys will insure a grass strimmer to a an earth mover and valid across Europe and with breakdown cover thrown in. My Hiace 3L diesel was £218 fully comp with a named driver but I have 6 years no claims - also the premium went down by £12 this year as they feedback profits to policy holders.
