Mounted on the horizontal rad of my 4wd 2.0 TD Townie are a couple of fans, should these be running when the engine is running or are they thermostatically controlled? Also is the autobox filled by the dipstick tube or is there another filler somewhere?

Those fans are two speed- low speed when the a/c in on, high when the engine overheats (sensor on water neck)
Fill the autobox down the dipstick, yes.
