(Home) Injection pump adjustment

I'm seeking a bit of advice on any adjustments I can make to the fuel pump on my 2C-T engined Masterace. On the MOT the emissions figure was high (6) and I assume that this is "particles per million". The MOT maximum figure, for a turbo, is 3. I had the pump adjusted and got a pass figure of 1.6. However, there is now a VERY big drop in power. I have changed the air filter and the fuel filter but, I think that the pump tune Company went a bit too far to overcome the excess emisson figure. I had not noticed any black smoke when the emission figure was high but,I feel that an adjustment to give a bit more power would not jeopardise the emission figure too much. Could anyone kindly give any advice re where I would make an adjustment on the pump ? Any advice much welcomed

John,
what's your idle and maximum speeds set like? should be 800 and 5200rpm.
If they're a bit low, adjust the main fuel screw, sticks out the back of the pump above the injector pipes. Note it's position, slacken locknut and turn the screw in a tiny bit- an eighth of a turn is probably too much... tighten the locknut (careful with the adjustment) and try.
If the governed speeds are correct, or you don't want to fiddle with what is a very fine adjustment, take the four screws off the top of the boost diaphragm on top of the pump, MARK the diaphragm's position, then withdraw it. There is an offset taper to the rod under it. Rotate it slightly so that the taper is deeper at the front (again try an eighth) rebuild and try.

Many thanks David. With my sedate type of motoring, I would not normally bother but, with the emission, on my vehicle now at 1.43, and an allowed maximum of 3 (turbo),I do feel that I could get a little bit more power without jeopardising the emission figure too much.
I was not too sure of where I should make the adjustment but, with your advice, I will have a go tomorrow. The idle speed has always been perfect at 800 but, I notice now that it is slightly lower than that. I will try the fuel screw with much delicacy and try the performance. Just one point, and excuse my ignorance over this, you really did mean take the screw IN slightly. Would this increase the fuel feed volume or, should the screw come OUT slightly ? I am assuming that I need a little bit extra fuel.
Thanks again for the advice

In for more fuel..

Many thanks David. My experiments, with your advice, have now resulted in no smoke (well, not much) and it goes like a Ferrari.
Thanks for the guidance.

hi to all

My mechanical knowledge is very little i am trying to reduce the smoke pumping out the rear, could someone tell me where to locate the fuel pump and whether it is difficult to alter the settings to minimise the smoke as it is looking like i am driving an old banger and not giving the townace a very good impression to other car drivers behind me.
i have a 2Lt TD 4WD 92 townace. I have just spent £153 having the injectors serviced,,i bit much i think!! Many thanks

Henry

There are a number of factors that can cause black smoke. Don't touch the fuel pump settings unless you really know what you are doing. These things require specialist equipment to set up properly. They aren't like messing with carbs. I believe there's a comprehensive section on black smoke on AceAnswers.

hi Ian

Thanks for the advice which i will heed. I have just booked it in at a diesel specialist, will leave it to them they seem reasonable.
