(Home) Turbo

Turbo for 2CT Town Ace. I ned to replace or have repaired the turbo for my town ace. An oil seal has gon and there is excessive play in the shaft. I have taken the turbo off but don't know what to do next.
Also how do I post to BoK

The CT-12 is difficult to rebuild, you're talking £300 for an exchange one from Turbo Technics or the like. Secondhand £150-200 from a breakers is OK. I know, I put one in last month. The bearings re floating, BTW, so play is normal- my replacement felt like it had as much play as the faulty one. Endfloat shouldn't be discernable, though.
re. posting, you just did...

i have the same problem with my turbo and have been getting various quotes for a reconditioned one,,some being really scarey.at time of posting rand up bbc and they said they had no second hand ones in stock for at least 3 weeks, which made me think do i really want a second hand one and risk it packing up on me again after a while.contacted turbo shop ltd in daventry and spoke to vince who was very helpful and said to recon, mine would cost anything from £175-£465 and assured me they can do it.
so i will give it a go. i will report result back.

Just thought i'd write about the turbo screaching on the townace, I started to panic and took it to a machanic to have a look, told him to do a service while he was at it, well he changed the oil and filters, but said he did not know anything about the turbo. But since I have had the vehicle back from him there's been no screaching from the turbo at all, just wondered if that was something to do with the oil change. He did say that the oil was like treacle.

Probably, if the oil wasn't circulating properly, then the turbo bearings would be dry & prone to a lot of noise, you were lucky it didn't destry the turbo, I would run it for a few hundred miles, then do an engine flush, change the oil & filter again, and use a synthetic diesel oil for it, should help protect engine & turbo. I run Comma Syner D oil in mine & change oil & filetr every 3000 miles (5000 Km) this is wise advice. Rob.

Thanks Rob I'ii take your advice and change it every 3000 miles

Hi ..some help needed
Turbo... green light on townace 2ltr 2wd turbo not comming on... tested light by blowing up pipe and it comes on .. Turbo sounds like its working light whine on acceleration and performance seems ok. Pipe to manifold and over pressure switch seems ok.
Could it be low boost pressure? how would I adjust
Or is there another likely cause... open waste gate? also average 28 mpg seen many higher mpgs quoted

the line to the pressure switches and injection pump comes from a spigot under the air hose, on the inlet manifold. This can become blocked due to carbon buildup from EGR. Ensure that you can blow into the manifold from the pipe.

Thanks for the info David ...
Turned out to be that the last owner had connected hoses wrong... Special thanx to Ian Dunse whos picture and key I used to trace the pipework..

Pump had not been injecting enritched fuel and pressure sensor was not getting a feed for the dash light.

i seem to have a flange gasket blown on my turbo. it looks as if there is an exhaust type flange clamp inbetween the exhaust side if the turbo and the main body of it. i've tried to remove the clamp to see if i can reseal it but the nuts are that tight i am sure that any movement will result in them snapping off (the top half of the clamp has fixed studs).

i've tried to look at the turbo pictures under engine mechanical in ace archives, but cannot download them (just get a small box with red 'x' in). the only breakdown i could find doesn't show the clamp i'm after. while i can still use it a bit i don't want to remove this clamp until i have a new one...anyone had trouble with this before or know the part number etc that i would need - i've had dealings with my local toyota dealer before and am not very confident!!

Wooooh......Don't waste any time on my question; Looks like it's something else. Sorry to anyone who has already been looking...!

I'll confirm what it is later....

Sorted it! Before I started ordering parts I thought I'd best just double check the source of the exhaust blow (bought my Townie with a strange sort of 'farting' noise that started mid throttle +). I removed the two heat shields off the top of the manifold so I could run it and see better where it was coming from. I soon found the source; all four nuts holding the turbo to the manifold were missing!! I suppose it must have only had one on when I bought it and that finally fell off...

Luckily for me I've got away with buying four nuts and it's sealed ok....No more farting:), mind you, those nuts are a bit tricky to get at, aint they. I got round it by cutting down a combi spanner to about three inches and tapping them round lightly with a small hammer. I also used a small shanked ring spanner slid over the shank of the combi to give me a right angled leverage; that also worked ok.

After the saga of my head gasket I start again, like Stewart my turbo sounds like a kid running a stick along iron rails,it started when overtaking a a diesel cowboy on a hill who tried to stop me going past him, anyway have been advised on cursory inspection it could be a blown gasket at the rear end £60 there abouts at worst turdo caput.Question:- have been told i can blank off turbo & still run with no ill effect other than slower speeds untill i can afford a new tubo unit, any response by the clever Dave Millers of this site would you please E/Mail as urgent reply needed.Thank you one & all.
