(Home) Fuel gauge & consumption, & radio removal, Spacecruiser (Spa)

Hello

I recently purchased a 1983 2l, automatic, petrol engine Space Cruiser for the princely sum of £400. This seems a bargain as it's in fairly good condition, not much rust, starts second time etc.

As this is my first car and I'm right naive in the ways of vehicles generally, I wonder if you knowledgable types would be able to answer me a few small queries?

Firstly I drove from Somerset to London last week (about 200 miles ata fairly constant 65 mph) and it drained the tank dry from full. Does this sound about right?

Secondly my fuel gauge isn't working - this problem isn't as serious as it might be as the fuel warning light still works, but can anyone tell me how it could be fixed?

Finally - much to your relief, I'm sure - how does one go about removing the radio/cassette? It seems fairly secure and I don't want to break it.

This is a fine site for anyone with a Space Cruiser - kudos to all those involved.

1. Less than 20mpg at that speed is v. poor. Get it tuned.
2. Could be the gauge or the float/sender in the tank. If the former, try and get a replacement from a scrappy. If the latter - nightmare. Need to drain and remove tank and hope that sender unit is removable. Could well be too rusted in. In which case you need a new tank.
3. Not sure. It may require two "slide-hooks" which push in two locking protrusions then hooks in and allows you to pull the unit out. Two small screw drivers may help to overcome this.

1. Agree get it tuned and it will start first time.

3. If the unit has Toyota on it, is it probably screwed in -this involves taking the fascia off of the dash approx 30-60 mins, a small stuby X head for passenger (blind side) driver side al sorts of bits in the way. If not Toyota Ian may be right if a cage has been fitted.
