(Home) Engine required

My wife broke down on the M4. Quite traumatic as it had our disabled son in the back being taken to school. Had our Townace about 1 year (L reg 2.2 litre 3CT engine diesel automatic). Engine completely gone - I had a look this morning and it showed horrible internal wear, according to the mechanic caused by water getting into the engine. It had run beautifully until then. So
I need to get a new engine:
1) Will a 2CT fit in OK ?
2) Mechanic asks if the engine will come out of the cab rather than out of the bottom as there are a number of things in the way.
3) Is it worth the extra expense of getting a 3CT direct replacement as opposed to a 2CT ? And what is a 3CTE engine ?
4) Any good suggestions for where to get engines ?

Thanks, Bill Jones

2ct will go in, yes, but you loose 200cc. 3cte is electronic injection. Only the pump differs AFAIK- put your own on...
Personally, I'd drop the lump, the crossmembers come out to enable this. You might have to remove some ancilliaries though.

Thanks David. I have started to get some quotes in
it looks like a 2CT can be had for around £300 whereas a 3CT, much less commonly available, is more like £800. Is the difference in performance worth this kind of differential ? Or if not the difference in performance then things like resale value ?

Sorry to keep posting as these things crop up
but apparently the 3CT engine is also used in the Toyota Estima and Lucida, but is mounted differently (transversely ?). The engine in the Townace is upright. Can a Lucida 3CT engine be used in the Townace - is it just a metter of different mountings - or not ?

It's still longitudinal in the Previa and it's clones, but inclined. Don't know if the block and mountings match. From what I have heard, there isn't much difference performancewise between 2c and 3c.Bigger donkey gives slightly better mpg's,though

Bill, as David says, the 3CT in the Lucida, Estima & Emina models is mounted almost on it's side, under the floor, still logitudinal, driving rear or all 4 wheels, from what I can gather the engine is basically the same, but the sump is weirdly shaped to account for engine being on it's side. I suspect the engine would go in a townie, but the biggest problem is that the gearbox may not mate due to the angle problem. I would personally just compromise & put a 2CT in it, lose the viscous fan & go electric while you're doing all this work, then you wouldn't even notice the drop in a couple of HP & fuel consumption would improve.HTH regards Rob.
