(Home) Cr30 front wheelbearing

Hi

I've recently noticed a clonk on the front n/s wheel. I gave the wheel a good push/pull and it appears to play in the bearing. The bearing doesn't seem to be noisy; can somebody tell me if the bearings are adjustable (i.e. tapered roller) or fixed? Will I have to change the bearing?
Thanks
Rob.

Tapered - but make sure it's not play in the bottom ball joint making the clonk.

If it's the wheelbearing, you'll need to remove the locking hub (6 bolts, 6nuts with cone washers, one bolt at the end of the axle) then there's a big (2") locknut and washer setup. Set for barely perceptable play, then locknut and fold tab over.

Hi

Many thanks for your replies. It was play in the wheelbearing; I dismantled & cleaned the bearings and repacked with grease before replacing & setting. It wasn't as difficult a job as I'd anticipated. Thanks again.

You were lucky- the cone washers can be an absolute nightmare to get out sometimes...

Hi David

I did have a bit of gip getting the cone washers out - I used a bolster chisel on the flange between the two hubs and gradually worked my way around the hub until they started to move. I noticed that once one washer moved the rest followed quite quickly. After doing the head job on one of these I must say the front hubs were a welcome relief!!!
