(Home) Thump in transmission

Hi all, great site!

Couple of probs I need solving... I've just had some major repairs done to my '95 Auto Diesel Townace (Jap imported model). Timing belt snapped at 85,000km - ouch!. Anyway, got the beast back from the mechanics (as they like to call themselves!), and now have:

1. A loud 'thump' when putting it into reverse or drive from park. Changes ok once running in drive. It's fine when cold, but once the engine has been running for a while, the 'thump' gets worse. Was able to go from park to neutral, then drive without the 'thump', but now can't even avoid it that way. I've changed the transmission fluid twice(was pretty dirty), but hasn't made any difference. Any ideas?

2. A metallic rattling sound coming from the rear of the van when decellerating or braking. Getting worse / louder each day. Would this be a worn Universal?

Any and all suggestions / help would be greatly appreciated - just go easy on me & explain things as you would to a 4 year old!

Worn U/J or slack driveshaft could cause both...

Thanks David ...

Yep, certainly was the U/J. Only problem was you can't change the U/J on the imported Townace - it's welded in! So I had to replace the entire tail shaft.

Thanks again.
Steve.
