(Home) Noisy clutch

Help! I've just bought 91 Townie Super Extra, and every time I change down through the gears I get a horrible noise from the clutch. The dealer has given me a receipt for a new plate and thrust bearing. What's wrong!

What sort of noise is it? Does it only happen when you let your foot off the clutch when changing down? Does it make the noise if you rev the engine with the clutch down? If it does any of the above, then it's most likely the bearing making the noise. Does it screech when you pull away? If so then it's most likely the plate against the cover or flywheel... What I have to ask is why on earth the dealer only changed to plate & bearing? if your going to the trouble of getting the g/box out & changing the plate & bearing, why not change the cover as well, it's not terribly expensive & could possibly be the cause of your problems! But that's not to say the the new (or perhaps exchange) parts that have been fitted or not faulty, it sometimes happens that the new item is faulty. If you purchased via a dealer presumably you got a warranty with it, if so, chuck it back at them to sort out, the problem won't go away, so get it sorted before the warranty runs out. HTH Rob.

Hi Rob
Noise happens when I depress clutch when going up thru gears not down (sorry). Its a kind of rumble I can feel thru the pedal. Will be returning to dealer, just needed to know what I'm talking about. Cheers.

Could be anything- faulty clutch parts, play in mainshaft bearings, play in crank main bearings, pilot bearing, possibly even something loose externally...
My guess would be gearbox mainshaft or pilot though...
