(Home) Turbo etc on 2ct engine for vw microbus

Hi There, Bear Here.
As You Have herd Befor Great Site And All The Rest Of That. I HAve A Few Questions For You, Firstly Let Me Give You Some Info On Me And My Car Or Van.
I Live In south Africa And I Am Doing A Engine Swap In TO A VW Microbus. Took Out A V6 3liter ford Engine (bad engine) and put a toyota 2c turbo (lookes Quite good) i have a few questions about the temp , turbo, glow plugs and the dash and stuff.
firstly what is the story with the turbo, do you have any idea's on what the "cooldown" time for these engines are?( how long does one have to wait to let it idel) Let Me Just Let YOu Know I Have Tryed TO Contact Toyota South Africa but they have not herd of a 2cturbo as it was not put in any cars here so no luck there. (2)What Temp Do these Engines Run at(water). (3) I Have Looked At A Few Of Your Pages But I Have Not Found A Strate Answer How Long Do The Glow plugs Run For? +- Will Do For me, as I Have To Build A GlowPlug Times. (4) The REv Counter, I Know The Diesel pump Has A Inductive Pick-up But I Cant Find Any Diagrams On The Rev COunter It Self As I Need TO "Gimmy" My One To Make It Work. Do You Poss Have A Diagram On It ? (5) The DAsh, I Need To Put A Few Extra Lights On My DAsh As This Engine supports It, E.g. water in fuel low oil ect. so i was wondering if you could poss send me a photo of your dash and a nice close up of all you warning lights ( i don't know if it is my pc or what but i cant load or see the pic of the dash on this websight & the pic of the warning lights pic is not very clear) well i have forgoton what else i wanted to ask you so that is all have for now.
If You COuld Help Me That Would Be Great. Thanks Very Much. Bear Spreadbury

Bear,
The 2CT has a water cooled turbo, so unless you have been absolutely thrashing it, you only need to let the engine return to idle, wait a few seconds for the turbo to slow down, then switch off, as they don't run very high pressure or speed. The use of high quality, synthetic oil is a must though.
The t-stat is around 88 degrees, with the fan switch cutting in around 103 degrees, but beware, if these engines overheat, then the head gasket can go & lead to loads of problems, this is well documented on this Ace Answers website . The glow plugs have a two stage timer, I suggest you try to obtain the timer relay unit from a vehicle that uses the 2CT, as it would be easier than building your own, basically it keeps the plugs on at full heat for say ten seconds, but keeps them on at reduced power after start up, to aid cold running, I beleive the timings depend on temperature.
Sorry can't help too much on rev counter problem, as I haven't had to play with that circuit.
The water in fuel is sensed at the filter housing, assuming you have the original filter, then you can hook this up, most of these lamps rely on a constant live, then earth out when 'on' basically if the switch or sensor has only one terminal, then it tends to be earth switched, if it has two terminals, then it could be switching earth, but most likely it will switch live. So provide your dash with both constant earth, & ignition switched live & you can hook any of these lamps in to take advantage of the 'extra' warning lamps. There are also two sesors for the turbo, one comes on when the turbo comes onto boost, around 1700rpm, the other is an 'overboost' light, this warns of impending doom, as most likely the wastegate is stuck & causing too much turbo pressure. I'll try to get a decent photo of the dash with the lamps on tomorrow, British weather allowing & e-mail it to you directly. Hope some of this helps, Regards Rob.

Interestingly enough, someone else has just completed the same swap! If I find his email, i'll send the address to you. As Rob says, the CT12 is watercooled, so no probs there.
re the glowplugs, there is a thermosensor in the block (above the starter), although there are a number of timers that could be attached. One from a Hilux would do you (should be easy in S.A.)But the complexity of the timer depends somewhat on the ambient temps you expect(only need post-heat if it's cold...). There are universal timers available too, esp. in Australia.
re the tacho, the sensor is in the back of the injection pump, it's an inductive sensor, but i don't know how many pulses/ rev
