(Home) Dashboard warning lights

Hi All
Its me again. On my 92 Super Extra 2ltr td Townie ared warning light keeps flashing at me intermitantly, the only way to describe it is an oil can over a liquid, the can is smalller than the low oil level can and does not have a drop of liquid at the end of the spout. The symbol on the right is the t belt and on the left is what looks like a symbol for the sump dripping oil.

I have checked the levels and all appear ok so can anyone tell me what this light is warning me of. If it helps the symbol is on p83 of the handbook and is the third symbol down.

Oil pressure. Can sometimes be a dodgy switch. Try cleaning the contacts on the sender, sometimes removing, cleaning and replacing cures it. If still flashing, suggest you check oil pressure.

Hello Marc.
There are two, engine oil warning lights. One is displayed on start up and, is extinguished as the oil pressure builds up. It is not exactly a "low level" indicator, it's function is an "oil pressure" indicator. It's symbol has the "oil drip" from the spout of the oilcan. The other IS a low level, engine oil warning light and the symbol is exactly as you describe it. If you are happy that the engine oil level, measured on the dipstick, is at a satisfactory level, possibly there is a fault in the low level "sender" device and this will, presumably, be some sort of float switch in or adjacent to the sump. I am not sure how this is signalled and others might be able to explain. Also, it could possibly be an indication that the oil filter needs changing

float switch...

If it's a red light then it is pressure, RED means STOP, you have a problem, as Ian rightly says, it could be a faulty transmitter, or a blockage in the orafice in the switch, or a dodgy wire. The oil LEVEL warning light is amber in colour, amber meaning there is a problem, but you needn't stop immediately. If the red one is flashing intermittantly then most likely the connection is faulty. I suggest that you have the oil pressure checked with a gauge, and the wiring checked with a multimeter. This will then determine the problem.HTH Rob.
