(Home) Oil leak & turbo

Hi evryone

I have recently noticed blue smoke coming from my exhaust while in idle,, there is no trace of smoke while the vehicle is moving. After having a quick lookaround underneath i have noticed that i am leaking oil from somewhere and it appears to me that the oil is dripping into the the exhaust and being blown out as the blue smoke that i have mentioned.I took the vehicle to a garage to have it inspected and he is blaming the turbo and that i need a new one, saying something about an oil seal that is gone.He says that is why i do not have much power, but i know townaces are not hot movers anyway.I have recently had the injectors serviced and fuel pump setup,so nothing wrong in that department.
I made a seperate query with a diesel specialist and he said that if the turbo was no good then i would have no power at all and i would be blowing smoke out all of the time. Can anyone enlighten me as to the oil leak and whether he is trying to pull the wool over my eyes regarding the turbo. The green turbo light comes on when it should and orange one does not come
on. 4WD 2lt turbo diesel 1992 Many thanks

the ct12 turbo in the townie is known for killing it's seals at a high mileage. The seals resemble a piston ring, running in a groove on the shaft.A bit of wear can cause the consumption you describe. Only if the seal collapses will you burn lots of oil, and the turbo will continue to work until the bearings give in. You could have a fair bit of life left, perhaps not. The fear is of a catastrophic discharge of oil into the intake- this could cause the engine to rev uncontrolled, or make the engine hydrolock on the oil.
Not good. get it checked or replaced.

Hi dave

Would you say that i do need a new turbo then?

get it looked at. if you work on the bus yourself, take the turbo off and send it to turbo technics or the like. they'll inspect and advise. or just replace it- secondhand from bbc £150+ vat. a rebuild is around £300 btw
