(Home) Unknown noise

I sometimes hear what seems to be an airtype noise when accelerating...almost as if air is restricted. The only way I can explain it is it sounds like some sort of wind type schoooo noise. After the van shifts from 2nd to third the noise stops, but if the transmission kicks down, I hear the . I thought at first it was only when I run aircon. I heard the noise today again while not running aircon, although I had run it for an hour before. I might not be making any sense, but it is the only way I can explain the sound. If anyone can give some input it would be a great help.

Note
I adjusted the kickdown cable and seem to be getting the shifts I want.

Learned opinion is it's the viscous fan. Don't know why it does it though. If it's a problem I suggest you turn up your radio :-)

Mervin, without stating the obvious, you sure the noise isn't just the turbo spinning up? The reason i ask is you descibe the noise happening as you accelerate(turbo kicks in, boost pressure builds up), noise gets louder, then go from 2nd to 3rd, engine revs drop, boost pressure falls away until revs rise again etc.etc. Sorry if this sounds plainly obvious, but the way you describe the noise are the characteristics of a turbo.

Regards, Tony.

thanks everyone for your repsonses. tony, i'm sure the noise
i hear from time to time is not the turbos kicking
in...this is something seperate. it sounds actually like
some kind of blower. it seems to be louder when the engine
is hot and has been running for a while. ian, you mentioned that
it could be the viscous fan. is this something that is common?
will it get progessivly louder?? or does it just happen sometimes?
my next question, is it dangerous?

i've had my townie for a month now and really enjoy it. i'm sure i will be
asking a lot more questions. i just ordered new shock
absorbers and ball joints. by the way, i obtained a
copy of the lite ace/townie service manuel in russian. i paid $8.00
for it at the auto parts.

No I'm sure it isn'r dangerous. It doesn't happen all that often and must be attributable to the temperature and the sudden load put on the engine. Those that have an electric fan don't get it so viscous fan sounds right. Don't see what else could make that level of noise.
