(Home) Petrol engine owners-any know problems, please

Hi all,

I got my townie a month ago, I must confess best thing in life, after kids not spouse :>), 89 Townace Super Extra, auto 4WD 2.0L P, EFI 3Y engine, w/ 48k Km on the dash. I have been following, enjoying and learning from this wonderful site since last year, but I kind of notice very few petrol engine related posts. EFI owners please, can you share any known/common problems on these machines? Most of all, has anyone suffered from the cooling nightmare described in 2C-T engines? And sorry for this silly one
My exhaust is pouring too much water, even after engine is well warm. My mechanic says it's a healthy sign, but to me it's too much water pouring, really. Does this sound like trouble? Any comments will be most welcome.

My very honest opinion
guys like David M, Rob D, Ian D, Steve FE, etc. should run the United Nations, and the world would be less starving. Thank you, guys.

BTW
I am from Mozambique, southeastern Africa, #3 country in the development pyramid... upside down, of course.

So assuming we ruled the world, evryone would have to run a Townace? Hmm that should bring the price of spares down!

Petrol engines create water as a bi products of the reaction in the cylinders, a reasonable amount of water indicates a well tuned engine, this should really burn off as steam when the engine is truly warm, but you often find that vehicles used mainly in town create quite alot of water & trap it in the exhaust system, this is why toen cars often rust the exhaust from the inside out, especially rear boxes, take the beast out on a good long run & get all the water out occasionally. Unfortunately for you, most of the contributors to this site own Diesel 2CT or 3CT Townaces, so by definition the info is somewhat biased to these engines, to my knowledge there is little trouble with the 3Y engine, I would say follow the diesels, change oil & filter regularly, along with full services regularly & also check the coolant level often, as they all suffer from poor air flow, especially at speed. HTh Rob. P.S. I am going for 'Townace Special Envoy To the UN' anyone vote for me?????

Thanks Rob, for the info, and the peace of mind in it-you are absolutely right on the rear exhaust box rusting due to water, I changed mine with a new stainless steel box, OEM from a VW Microbus (?)), as I could not find anything branded Toyota to fit. I did not dare to touch the middle box, though lot of rust is evident. I did oils and filters as soon as she arrived from Japan but I decided to wait on the coolant change for when I visit Toyota, to also replace the rad cap and thermostat (just in case). BTW
I also own a wonderful 2C townie small truck, so most of the posts are directly relevant to me as well. 'Townace Special Envoy To the UN', you bet you have my vote!!! Maybe this is discussion subject for the next ace jam get ogether :>))

I had a carb version of the 3Y engine in my Space cruiser. When sold it had 240,000 miles on the clock. No engine work ever undertaken! The gearbox was overhauled due to it's use in towing, the clutch was still the original only the release bearing needing replacement. Half shaft oil seal, rear gearbox oil seal, radiator, and upper and lower ball joints (twice) were the only things needing replacement. I changed all the water hoses as a precaution when I did the rad. The moral I think is look after it, with frequent oil changes (when it runs off the dip stick is a good indication for a change) and a good tune when it starts to feel/sound a bit rough. What is the price of Diesel and petrol per litre in Mozambique?

That's super, Clive. I read about your Spacecruiser's mileage at http://townace.port5.com/acejam.htm (btw, great pics from the few bravest who showed up; I wish I was there too with my clan), and that confirmed my bias towards Japanese cars. After failing with European models (Opel and Alfa-Romeo), I have had a Corolla, which was inherited by my other half (i.e. wife) when I went for a Camry (which has now 198k Km on the clock, bough it in 1998 with 99k Km). So far, both have given nothing serious, just happy motoring, in exchange of the usual servicing..
In MZ petrol is US$0.47 and Diesel US$0.38 (cents of a US dollar per litre, which I believe makes it 2.12 and 1.71 US dollars per gallon, respectively). How much are you paying in the UK?
- (#3987) Manecas, 26 Jul 02

A little over US$1 for both!

- (#4016) Clive, 28 Jul 02

per litre of course Clive, I make it $1.15 per litre on today's rate, or $5.22 per gallon. Cgrist we really are getting stiffed by President Blair on this one aren't we. Rob.
