(Home) Insurance, write-off

Had a nasty smash on Monday whilst towing caravan. The front tyre deflated and ended up in a jack-knife with the Townie smashed over the rear offside wheelarch and lots of damage to the rear chassis pushing the rear wheels out of alignment and other damage underneath. The repairers reckon it's a write-off. So my next problem will be convincing Tesco (who do not supply a courtesy car!) the true value of my Townie. An immaculate H reg, 51000klms, 4 wheel drive, manual transmission, hot and cold box and well maintained. I would be very grateful if you could send me any opinions on valuation. I have looked via the internet at adverts that suggest around £5,000. I paid £5,100 last August.

£5,000 would sound pretty fair if you were to try to replace from a dealer, slightly less privately. If you are going to replace it, see how much the insurance company want to buy it back, may well be worth stripping it for parts. P.S. If yours has electric curtains & you do wish to 'break' it can I buy two of the curtain rail assemblies from you. Regards Rob.

You could always put your old bits on this one up for sale on ebay - current price is only £340 but needs new cylinder head etc.

Mike

I doubt the insurers are going to take your word for a valuation. They usually look at market price and offer that. A bit more difficult for a Townie though. You need to know that what they offer you is reasonable and if you contest it you need proof of value. Check the likes of Autotrader on-line. £5k sounds about right

The insurance on my 1990 Townace Super Extra was due and the best quote I had was £300.00+, fully comp for myself and my wife. This figure did not include protected no-claims. I tried Liverpool Victoria's Frizell Direct Motor Insurance and the result? - Renewed for £162.69, fully comp including Legal protection AND protected no-claims!! Beat that! If your insurance is due for renewal, give 'em a try - you've nothing to lose!
