Petrol pump

Investigating starting problems recently i discovered that the fuel pump wasn't working. When I got the old one off I found that the pump arm was ground away to a stump. Had a ridiculously hard job getting hold of a new one so as an interim measure I got hold of a scrap toyota pump (wrong pump - right arm) and replaced the 'stump'. Didn't work but when I got this out found that again the arm had worn badly. Put this down to the pump internals being siezed and hoped that nothing untoward had happened to the cam. Evenyually got hold of the right pump from a spares dealer featured on the board, fitted it and everythinng worked first time. This happy state continued for a few days and the old problems started to creep back. apart from the hassles of floor lifting I'm getting dismayed as to the condition I may find the new pump in. Is this another 'common hassle' or have I damaged the cam? has anyone replaced the mechanical pump with an electrical one and if so what would be suitable? Thanks for any advice.
