(Home) Oil magnetic?

Hi Mervin, in answer to your question i will say this. I use Castrol fully synthetic GTD(especially for Turbo Diesels), i always use Wynns engine flush before dropping the oil & i always add wynns oil additive for TD's with the new oil. I do this every 3000 miles(4800kms) regardless of whether it needs it or not.
It is probably abit early than most people would change their oil, but i am an experienced marine engineer, so i know it pays to change your oil early, especially if a turbo is fitted.
You are suggesting 15000kms (9375 miles) between oil changes, this i would say is a bit on the high side & i would suggest no more than 5000miles (8000 kms), between oil changes.
Of course this is only my opinion & i'm sure other people will have their's.

HTH Regards,

Tony.

Hi Mervin, I have been told by an expert that any fully synthentic oil will never break down as normal oil will. Thats not to say it will still build up sludge carbon and generally get dirty. He has told me if you change normal oil at 5000 miles you can safly change at 10000 so you can double the mileage with fully synthentic. Question for Tony, I thought castrol gtd is a standard oil for turbo diesels and not a fully synth oil as that was what I used in my ford mondeo as recomended by my brother in law trader in fords.

Phil, in answer to your question you had me thinking, so i had a look on the oil can & it says that its synthetic oil. I'm sure that this is a new oil from Castrol, only been around for about a year, the diesel version of Castrol GTX fully synthetic oil.
Sorry can't tell you any more.

Tony.

Tony, thanks for that info. I have put comma fully synthetic in mine but when I change it I will use the castrol as I have always used it before.
Could you tell me is it just called castrol gtx and how much for 5 lts.
Thanks Phil.

Phil. Castrol do "standard" diesel GTD. But, they also do Magnatec GTD which is semi synthetic. Halfords have a price of around £15.99 for the plain GTD and about £17.99 for the Magnatec GTD. IHTH The pack is 4.5 litres but, more than enough for a complete oil change.

John. Thanks for that I will look in halfords and check price etc. Agreed 4.5 litres is enough as I bought 5 litres of comma and had a small amount left. That included filter change.

There are only a handful of actual oil refining companies in the world, although there are many hundreds of brand names on oils. Castrol is owned by Burmah, which is one of the bigger groups. The oil I use is COMMA SYNER D, a FULLY SYNTHETIC 5w/40 grade DIESEL OIL, it is ACEA B3 rated (The highest European Spec oil for Diesels inc Turbos) at this quality they all have positive charged properties, so should do what Castrol claim of Magnatec. Comma Syner D can be bought in the 'factors' for about the price that you are currently looking at for the SEMI SYNTHETIC Magnatec. You're paying for the brand name. Incidentally, Comma are part of Exxon, who also have Mobil amongst others as their brand names. HTH Rob.

Rob, Ditto on that comma oil. Just checked the container same COMMA SYNER D, FULLY SYNTHETIC 5w/40 grade DIESEL OIL, ACEA B3 rated.
On cold start in the mornings it does appear to make the engine less noisy than the castrol rx that I had in before. The fully synthetic clings better to all the moving parts I guess.
Thanks Phil

Ok, fella's, you've convinced me, i'll give the Comma oil a try next time.

Cheers, Tony.
