(Home) Head renovation, choice of headgasket

I drove about 50 mile on the motorway hammering my 92 townace at about 80-90mph last week. As I came off the motorway I noticed the temperature gauge go up so I quickly stopped, by the time I stopped the gauge had gone up to the top. I noticed under the car there was a puddle of water trickling. I called the AA and the guy said it could be headgasket and towed me home. Next morning the mechanic topped up the water and had it running for half hour and no overheating. After this I have driven about 70 miles locally and checked water level lost about 1.5 pints of water and also noticed when I lift seat up for engine after driving it seems very hot more than usual.HELP.

Headgasket. But replace your rad cap first to be on the safe side...

- (#5133) david miller, 16 Aug 02

Thank you David
I noticed one thing after filling water and driving round the vehicle is losing water from the expansion tank and also the expansion tank is full.
Does this mean anything.
thanks again
Farook

If the water is bubbling out of the tank, likelyhood is that the gasket has indeed failed.

- (#5135) david miller, 16 Aug 02

Sorry about this Dave
Could it not be the thermostat or the waterpump or anything else I could have checked out. I will replace the the radiator cap.
If it is the head gasket what does that mean and approx. cost involved and do I get parts from dealers.

Thanks again
Farook

Farook, the water pump doesn't give problems on the 2C.Stat is unlikely, but fool free to replace it...

Head gasket? if you have to ask, don't try it yourself. Only use a Toyota gasket, and ensure the head is checked for cracks and warpage.
Cost? God knows. Others can help here, as I do my own labour...

hi farook were abouts are you..im from bradford .recently had new engine put in after failed head attempt? mechanic left a bolt in one of the pullies,,took it to another garage who not have exoerience with townaces but but both mechanics drive townaces.anyway cost should be around £350 to £400 all in..by the way can anyone enlighten me on the difference between "shim gaskets" and "card gaskets" other than the price shimm start from £40 to £75 ( dealers) and card at £20 .it actually says townace on the label

- (#5138) javed, 17 Aug 02

According to those that know, use ONLY the shim type gasket, and buy it from the dealer. It's made up of 4 or 5 thin shims rivited together.
Allegedly it's more reliable, biting into the surfaces rather than getting squeezed between them.

Thank you Dave and Javed.
Dave where are if you are close to Dewsburycan you do mine?
Javed I am down the road from you in Dewsbury I would be greatful if you could pass me info on good townace mechanic in Bradford. That is if Dave is far from us.

- (#5140) Farook, 18 Aug 02

Ha! no thanks, Farook. I only work on my own, and I'm in Belfast anyway...

hi farook
just got your message, send me an email with your landline contact number..(i wont ring mobile,,)the garage that did my engine did say £350 to recon my head, so may be worth a try.ofcourse you do realise you will still have to find the course of the overheating which will be an additional cost,,
dave the first mechanic who messed the job up refused to use a shim gasket said had to many failures ie. metal to metal so i ran around like an idiot until i found one motor factor who got hold of a card gasket.the mechanic was estatic when i showed it to him.
look forward to hearing from you farook

Javed, I don't like the multishim gaskets either. But Toyota have changed to them, and a couple of Toyota/ cylinder head specialists have commented to fit nothing else. The surface finish of the head is critical, though.

I am looking at buying a 1999 Daihatsu Delta SE (a re-badged Liteace Noah) and am concerned at all this talk of overheating. Does anyone have any experience with one of these more recent models? It is quite different to coaches of old in that it has the engine under the bonnet rather than under the seats. It has a 2 litre petrol engine and auto trans.

thanks for your quick reply Dave you guys must spend hours in front of your pc? just as a matter of intrest when my head was skimmed the grinders misplaced 3 of the shims in the wrong place resulting in a constant tapping noise. neither the mechanic nor the grinders would except responsibilty it was all really crazy. later found out the grinders were not that reputable. antway thanks for the reply ,,,will now for next time.

Thanks to everyone who helped in diagnosing my fault and getting my Townie on the road yesterday (especially Dave and Javed) After taking the engine apart found the head cracked all the way down clearly visible. Cost for second hand head pressure tested and skimmed with shim gasket and service came to just above £500.00.
Dave is there any special advice on driving after replacement of head and gasket or do I just drive normally (like 80-90mph down the motorway.
Thanks again to all.

hi farook

Hi guys, I just found your site. I have a problem. I recently replaced my 2c with 2ct. It run fine but when I go fast like 70 mph and over, the temperature goes up. My new temperature guage keeps reaching near the 220 degrees F. It doesn't boil and i'm not loosing any coolant. Am I running safe of do I need to get a 3 core radiator?

- (#5478) Rohan Mallett, 11 Sep 02

220 is fine (100c) they seem to run up to 105 happily. More than that isn't good, but the cr30's aircon turns off at 112c...
Remember that the cooling system is pressurised and won't boil until nearer 115c...

- (#5479) david miller, 12 Sep 02

Thanks for your assurance Dave, last night a group of about 12 of us were travelling up a steep hill and the gauge reach about 202 degrees F. I was worried, but this morning there was no loss of coolant. However can I place a extra electrical fan on to reduce the temp. Could u please say how cause i'll likely do it myself.

Thanks

Recently revived a Masterace SURF Super Touring 1988 vintage (4WD T. diesel auto).-----Very thirsty--24mpg loaded.
Does anyone know if this model and year were fitted with torque lock up on top gear?
Mine is certainly not locking up--at50mph, revs rise & fall with throttle movement --if locked up, revs would rise & fall with road speed.
So if lock up has failed, being hydraulic I guess, any care one venture what's happened, and how easy to fix?
Comment for David Miller----bottom end of block O.K., rings gone---replaced all as matter of course, running sweet at present. Temp 92, but easily slips up to 100 on load in this cold weather! Have played with electric fans, but they don't drag enough wind thro, so back to V fan with electric manual back up ( 20 amp Peugot 405 cut down to 12")I will give the system a good chemical flush, can only be rad gunged as block & head clear. I am thinking of even fitting heater matrix under back end fed by copper pipes.
4 WD, I only have hub locks and lever inside, no dash switch or light----early ones like this I guess?
MPG--have yet to tweak fuelling and pump timing, but with no lock up, I guess mid 20's is fair really, don't drive it too hard , mainly round town with hospital patients aboard.
I have spare block ( shot head, and several odds and ends if anyone is desperate for bits)
Thanks all for help in getting the old girl running again, Townies really are an acquired taste aint they!!!!
