diry aircon? Leaking exhaust manifold? Heater stuck on recirc? Melting plastic somewhere?

Brian,

Had a similar problem, bad (rotten) eggs on my previous car; Typical cause is battery being overcharged (or loosing water), so I would first check there. Second less probable cause (don't laugh, I did and they were right) is a worn out clutch, of course in a manual transmission car, but you would feel it (if yours is one). Let us know if it turns out another cause.

thx both for your quick replies, i have checked the battery as mentioned but that seems to be ok, although one of the cells needed some water i could"nt find any visible leaks, going to check again later when i"ve been on the road for 4hrs. My townie is Auto so its not the clutch but thx anyway.
Have checked the aircon but that seems to be ok, will check out leaking ehaust manifold with reputable garage tomorrow, although there does"nt appear to be any noise or blowing from the manifold. Will keep you posted ..

Before you do, check the alternator...

ok, will get garage to carry out check on alternator first, perhaps you can tell me the reason for that though ?

thx again everyone for your help, have put new battery on & checked alternator, garage tells me alternator is reading 14 (whatever that relates to ) & 13 is usually the norm, but is nothing worth worrying about,
Si fingers crossed
