(Home) Power steering pump

Dave - doing all those fan mods has showed up a noisy powers steer pump - did you say that u did the bearings on yours ? . i might as well sort it out while the seats off - regarding those temps u wanted - the max temp so far has been 82 degrees on tickover, i had to set that low fan speed stat (hot water tank stat) on the rad to 70 degrees as it takes ages to cool enought to stop the fan when i switch off risking a flat battery- i ballasted the fan through an old lucas foglight unit which ended up just behind the battery box near the sill as there was no room in the engine compartment - the secondary stat for full speed is set at about 90 degrees and its a Kenlowe unit -I put a fan indicator light on the dash it glows dimly when the fan is running slow (ballasted)
and gets bright for full speed - but i havent had much of a chance to use it and check the temps on load as ive been overhauling the squeeky suspension and i had to wait 5 days for the numerous rubbers for the anti roll bars and the top of the shockers- Jim

Sounds good, Jim. Yes, I replaced the bearings in mine. You'll probably need a biggish vice and various sockets and tubes as spacers to press the bearing and shaft out, but it's easy enough. A big circlip retains the bearing.
I posted the size of the bearing some time ago, so it should be in the archives. If you need it, I can scan and send the relevant section of the manual to you on the stripdown...

Phoning round some of the spares suppliers I found on this thoroughly excellent site ( I am learning so much!)I'm looking for a power stearing pump for my J reg (1991)Townace 2L Turbo Deisel Automatic (super ace).
I have previously been quoted £349.48 + vat. Nippon Spares can supply 2nd hand for £40 + vat but BBC Spares need to know if it's a Woodruff key or spline connection. Can anyone enlighten me on the importance of this info?, how can I be offered supply without the supplier having this info? The garage doing the work for me can, ofcourse remove the existing pump and let me know in due course but if anyone can give me a speedy answer I'll get my townie back all the quicker (reading the threads it's suprising how many of us have 5 children, I'm just about grounded without it!)
Also, the power stearing pump failed shortly after I had the power stearing belt tightened, could there be a connection?

Ah, Bill has remembered. There are two types of pump, depending on the date of production. If you're sure yours is 1991, and to confirm this has it an identical pair of fan belts (4 in total) or a single one (3 in total)?
The offset of the pulley is different to compensate for the extra fan belt. that's the difference...

80.90 onwards SHOULD be the splined type.

My pump appears to have seized up.

Is it a major job to replace? I know the driver's seat and floor will have to come out - but what next? Is there any other dismantling to do or can I simply unbolt the old and put on a new one?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Simply unbolts. Clearances are tight, you'll probably need the pulley off to get at one of the mounts. Oh, and the hose fittings will be tight. Careful you don't strain them...

Power steering pump

Hello everyone!

My first time leaving a message and asking for help it was thanks to this site and the information that I got here that resulted in me buying my first Townace which I am very very pleased with. These are definitely the best people carriers anywhere. {a special thank you to Dave Mason for all his help}

The power steering pump (splined)decided to pack up the bearing cage broke up and the high pitched screams from the bearing (and me}were heard for several miles cats and dogs were seen running for miles windows were shattered men women and children panicked thinking that it may have been a missile attack.

I have read some old messages on the site but can someone please help with the following questions:

How much for a new one?

Can the old on be fixed and how? where do I get the parts?

How much for a second hand one?

My Townace is a 1991 diesel 2ltr td auto 4wd super extra skylite 8 seater.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Peter

just strip it and replace the bearings. Pulley off, bolts out, be careful to get the rotor etc off the rear, then just press the shaft out of the housing. Bearings are standard items. I believe I posted the types in the past, but there are two types of pump so safest to strip it first...
