(Home) Strange revs (Sp+)

I have a 2l petrol space cruiser with a 3y engine, driving along and the car started pinking really badly and the rev counter went round to 7000 rpm it did this for a short while and then returned to normal it has done this several times. Does anybody have any ideas as to what the problem could be, fuel consuption is normal and it runs perfect apart from this. Thanks in advance

I assume that it didn't actually rev up at all, just the rev counter ran round the gauge a bit, if it did this & also pinked, you either have an engine management problem with the actual ECU (I assume it's an EFi model) or there is a problem with the pick up in the distributor & this is telling the ECU the wrong information & causing the ECU to do silly things. Could also be other sensors on the engine management. Toyota engine control is usually very reliable, but anything electronis can go wrong, you need to find a good diagnostics specialist to get the flash codes out of your ECU to see if that sheds any light as to why this is happening, could be a problem to find though, as it is intermittent. Regards Rob.

your right Rob it didn't rev up just the gauge went right round, it is a 85 2L normal twin choke carb model, does this model have an ECU? and if so where is it located? I have fitted a new distributer cap, rotor arm and HT leads but it still does it but not as bad.

No, no ECU, but there is an ignitor module, either on the side of the distributor, or somewhere about the bay. Clean all connections before condemning it though...

thanks David, any idea what it looks like?

none at all, sorry! It'll be a plastic thingy with wires attached, probably marked "ignitor unit".(no sarcasm intended) Start off at the side of the distributor...

On my Cruiser the ignitor was part of and inisde the distributor. It was sealed in plastic, I never had to touch it so don't know how it fitted.
