(Home) Grinding noise

I am getting a grinding noise from the front of my 93 townace when i brake, especially when it"s been on the move for a short time.. Its like the brake pads are metal to metal, but they have only been on for approx 1000 miles and they look fine..Any ideas anyone please,

Pds might still be bedding in. Any chance of a stone trapped in one?

Both sides? Is it 4WD?
Bit of grit got stuck in. Pad clips/anti rattle bits all in correctly. Pull the pads out check and replace. Caliper itself on correct, rubber gaiters seated ok.
If all ok look for movement in suspension/steering/hub. Drive front wheels onto a glossy mag each and you will be able to turn the steering easy with out the engine running, with some one turning the steering wheel and you under looking listening

Brian. When the pads were replaced, were the "guide rods", on the calipers, inspected for free travel? They should have rubber gaiters in place to retain the grease. On my vehicle, I found that one of these guide rods was partially seizing and giving similar symptoms to yours.

As well as checking that everything is free, ungunged and able to move, check the surface of the pads. I've found some brands to be "harder" than others. Sometimes identified by a larger proportion of metal flecks than usual. The surface can almost look like polished steel. Rough them up with a bastard or rough cut file whilst maintaining a flat profile. This may have to be repeated after a couple of weeks but eventually they should bed in.
