(Home) Buying. What to look out for

Hello again! I'm about to purchase a diesel townie... having never owned a diesel(or a townie!) any help in avoiding buying a plum would be most appreciated. what are the tell tale signs? What do the dealers do to cover them up? I think i have a good idea how to check for overheating -pull up the seat and you can see the fan going round. Which seat is it? what other problems should i look out for in general? Thanks to all who respond. i already look forward to sharing my townie travels with you all, and am so greatful for a resource as good as this one !

All covered in Ace Answers and Townace Nutters UK sites. The seat is the front passenger seat.

Thanks clive its one thing i'll be sure to check... i have looked at aceanswers, but having only a slow connection its costing me a load tralling through the massive amounts of info on there! I don't really understand alot of it either, not owning a townie i have nothing as reference when something perticular is refered to... I guess an AA check will do the job best!

AA check will do nicely, and for peace of mind well worth it if you don't know what to look for. Get the AA to look over the warranty (I think they do one of their own following an inspection) so all things are covered, not that it will go wrong! Most of the postings are for problems, some horror stories, rarely a post saying another 50,000 miles nothing to report.
Read the section on cooling re the overheating, Dave's cheap temp guage enhancement, and the section on starting (sometimes does not then does (why?))- just to get an idea of what to watch out for and what to do.
Otherwise keep on trucking. Well as fast as a Townie will go! (Just back from a 200 mile trip with my new MP3 player in and a Honda 500 in the back -no problem!)

Thanks Clive! i did look at the AA warrenty, but it does say vehicles 8 years and younger... so i don't think they will cover a 1992... glad to hear your honda500 fits in the back! i should easily get my CBR400RR on the back seat!!

any idea where can i get warrenty on a 10year old townie?

Ah here it is! I knew i'd seen reference to a warrenty for a townie 2yrs @ approx £400. Under ownership>warrenty on ace answers... thanks paul chapman for that 1.

Have just acquired a toyota townace royal ounge - excellent buy (i think) to use as a second car - the kids love it!

It is 1990 4wd turbo 2 ltr turbo diesel - noticed some oil seepage from the rocker cover gasket - Any idea where I get a replcaement gasket from, part number etc etc. Based in London.
