(Home) Poor running/vibration/whistling

Hi All,
Long time since I have had to post a question, probably coz oldest sons mini is draing my bank account so I cant drive my townie!!!!!
Anyway, my 4wd townie isn't running well, this is hard to explain but iwill try, although I can reach speeds of 70mph it takes a long time to get there but at all speeds it feels as if you are driving with the brakes on, on starting the engine you hear a whistling which I think could well be the fanbelt slipping, but in my experience a slipping fanbelt would not make you feel as if you were driving through treacle with the brakes on, any thoughts would be gratefully accepted.

The second question is when braking from speed I experience a lot of juddering through the steering, checked the brakes recently and seemed ok but a little worn will need changing next 2/3k. any thoughts.
Thanx
Marc Hamilton

Whistle and low power? Check for leaks around the turbo.
Vibration under braking could be discs, balljoints, wheelbearings...

This can be a whole host of possibilities but mine began juddering when braking, particularly going into a roundabout. It turned out to be the rear brake cylinder on one side seized up.

thanx so far guys.
whistling is perhaps apoor description more like a sceeching at initial starting which then stops when van is moving but happens intermitantly at traffic lights or when stationary.
Marc.
