(Home) Regulator

hi there.i have a townace with a 2y-u,1800 petrol engine.Seems my alternator is overcharging, because i end up with a flat batt.Ireplaced the brushes in the alternator and did not see any regulor. With a digital meter i measure 14.7v at 3000rpm,please help, thanks Chris

Chris

You will have a regulator. Either as a separate box attached to the bulkhead or integral with the alternator. Later models go for the IC regulator attached to the alternator.

Assuming you have the former then without load the charging circuit should be giving out 13.8 - 14.8V and 10A or less between idle and 2000rpm.

It looks like you are getting charge. Does the red charge light confirm this ie. Comes on at ignition and goes off when engine running?

Are you sure the battery is not dead?

hi IAN DUNSE,thanks for your response,i found the regulator under the dash behind the glove box,it is an older twin relay type with a coil under the mounting.I tested 12.5 v at idle and 14.7 at 3000rpm AT THE LIGHTER CONNECTION.I tested 16.5v at the alernator and 9v at the nuetral so what do i do now ,please help

Change your battery. 14.7 is at the high end of the range, and tells me that your battery isn't loading the alternator enough. Overcharging wont flatten a battery- it could make it overheat and boil dry tho.
Are there any circuits staying live when you switch off?

Hi can you help me out here i'm looking for the regulator om my townace 2lt td 1990 i've looked under the dash no joy there i know dave miller said it could be inside the b post only thing is i done know what a b post is and where it is can anyone tell me and is there any other place that the regulator can be

- (#6500) EDWARD NEEDHAM, 28 Dec 02

The A post is the one where the windscreen is, the B post is the one the drivers/ passenger door closes on to and the C post would be where the back screen is.

Well found the regulator but getting a replacment is proving difficult is there an alternative to the original i can fit.... thenks for any reply's

Have you checked to see if it is duff? It is possible to adjust the voltage on these.

- (#6504) Ian Dunse, 31 Dec 02

Thanks for you reply but the regulator on my veical is of the integrated circuit type so there is no adjustment to be made.... The thing is it is working the battery is not going flat but the charge light is on all the time along with both turbo lights water in fuel light and exspantion tank light .I've been told it can be a fuse but all fuse on the fuse board are ok so it as to be the regulator at fault

the warning light part of the regulator is seperate from the voltage control, you might want to have the alternator diodes tested, as it's usually a tapping from them that drives the light. Check also for continuity between the warning light and whichever terminal on the alt/ regulator (depends...), might be a yellow/ white wire.

Thanks for that david but the regulator is separete frome the alternator the regulator is an ic regulator part no 27030-64120 12v i've been told it's only used on my model by daved coombs from toyota who now is getting me one just hope it fix's the problem not cheep £88.66 for a 2" x 2" x 1/2" bit of plastic

not dear either- an alternator for some Vauxhall/ Isuzus runs around £500!
Still reckon you should check the wiring from the warning light to the reg tho.

- (#6508) david miller, 1 Jan 03

Thanks david i will check the wiring as for the regulator considering what it is the cost to make must only be in the couple of pound mark so what kind of profit are they making on that ...but they have use by the throat and there not going to let go
