Hi, I have a 1989 Masterace TD, can anybody tell me if there is any other models with the same exhaust manifold as mine is cracked and needs urgent replacement. Live in Bournemouth - Many thanks - David

David,
Is it cracked in two (or) more pieces ? If not, does it need replacing ? Cast iron can be repaired by welding or, preferably, brazing, provided it is pre-heated first. A good engineering shop (Bournmouth, A marine eng shop ?) could advise you. If the crack has not travelled too far, arrest it's continuation by drilling a hole, get it brazed and then file the mounting face true.

masterace, townace, liteace- 2c-t manifolds are interchangeable. The only issue is that auto models have an EGR port at the rear. You can blank it off and/ or disable the system, tho...
John's right though, get it brazed or welded- there's a special stick for doing cast iron, the manifold must be preheated first.
And do ensure that the mounting face is true after. they do bend like a banana, and that extra stress isn't good.

David,
If the repair route does not appeal, I see that BBC spares < http://www.bbcspares.co.ukl > list s/h 2C manifolds at "from" £45.

my townie has recently developed a high pitch whistle when at high revs, eg. pulling away at lights and suchlike.
i thought the turbo had blown, not knowing much about
turbos or even diesel engines.
i took off the metal plate covering the exhaust manifold and noticed black soot all over the inside of it and two small cracks in the manifold itself
i was wondering would these cracks in the manifold cause the high pitch whistling i can hear??????????

yes

wow thanks for the speedy response
im on it now cheers.
you wouldnt happen to know a part no. for a new manifold please cheers.

Before panicking too much- manifolds aren't cheap,
cracks can be welded, and you'd really need to have it off and check the various gaskets and mating surfaces before condemning it.
It's not too big a job to get the manifold off- you can leave the turbo behind, but you will need a couple of "S" or crescent spanners to do the job.
Look carefully at the soot patterns, they will tell you where the leak actually is.
If the gasket face is out of true, get it ground flat.

Steve. The part number, for an exhaust manifold for a 2c-t engine,(which yours is likely to be,)and for production years 1988 to 1991, is 17141-64130. If your vehicle is outside those dates, the dealer will be able to advise more fully. David is right, unless the manifold, which is cast iron, is in many pieces, (very unlikely), cracks can be arrested and welded, or brazed. The manifold has to be pre-heated before welding and, the mating surface checked for flatness afterwards, as David has pointed out. A good engineering workshop would undertake this and, as the cost of a new manifold is not likely to be cheap, renovation is often a very economic way of overcoming the problem

About 200 quid new

ive seen a manifold for sale on the bbc spares website
for 45 quid i know it wont be a new one but will it do the job??????????????????????????????????????????????

it should, but there's at least two types- with or w/o the EGR fitting on the back. Either way, can do- either remove the egr or make a blanking plate.
But you'll have to check a s/h one for cracks and flatness anyway. Have you looked at your own one yet?
