(Home) Space cruiser revs itself (Sp+)

Hi,

I have a Space Curiser GL Auto 1989. I have a problem with the revs getting stuck - this usually happens after accelerating hard, i.e. up a hill. The vehicle will rev up normally when you accelerate, but when you take your fut off the accelerator pedal, it just carries on at the same revs or higher. Slipping the auto gearbox in to neutral and the revs can be anything between 3000 and 5000. The accelerator pedal is fully up, no depression. The engine always starts first time, but again occasionally on starting the engine can reve to between 2000 - 3000 revs. Normally the engine idle quite normally, whether it is warm or cold. Sometimes the engine will not turn of wil run on for many minutes, this is rare and my petrol consumption is high. I have checked everything I can think of, cleaned the car with carb cleaner, lubricated things and checked connections - anyone got any advise or any information on the carb and how to set it up/check it.

regards

sounds like the second choke is sticking open. Ian can assist more I'm sure, tho...

Sounds very much like something is intermittently sticking in the carb. Carb cleaner unfortunately doesn't always get everywhere and the gum from petrol that accumulates over the years can take some shifting. It could also be the accelerator linkage. Check for any kinks in the cable and lubricate all linkage points. I'll send you the carb section from the manual that may help you trace the fault.

May also be the fuel cut off solenoid not doing it's job. Will be on the section that Ian sends you.
Could be time to overhaul the carb, how many miles has it covered?

I Had exactly the same problem with my Tarago, get your self a tin of CrC Carbie cleaner and give the choke and various bits a good squirt , then waggle everything untill you are sure that everything is free and not sticking--just remove the aircleaner and clean everything you can see (grin)

Thanks to everyone who sent help and even pictures and diagrams, it has been most helpful. I will be taking the carb out shortly - reckon it is the second choke/hard throttle bit that is sticking. I will let everyone know what fixes it. But thanks again all - hope I can return the favor sometime.
