(Home) Noise when cold

refering back to a thread in august, when a "whoosh" of air on pulling away was described.
i mentioned at the time mine has always done this, but only when cold.
noticed today, when trying to get going in a hurry, there is a severe lack of power whilst in first with the engine making this noise.
i think, although i'm not sure, the revs picked up faster than actual speed. not knowing too much about auto's, could this be similar to clutch slipping.
if so any ideas why only when cold. i took it up some very steep hills on holiday, no problem with slipping.
at this stage it is just curiosity, as apparently no other symptoms/ problems.

they really are sluggish when cold, anyway. If it's an auto, it doesn't have a clutch as such. Concensus was the noise was from the fan, and I've heard other viscous fan- equipped vehicles sound similar.
