I've managed to get hold of a complete Alternator from
A1JAPSPARES in Failsworth Manchester. If anyone has any
advice on replacement I would be most grateful. The guy
at A1 thinks the front end is supplied with vacuum - It
looks more like an oil fed/cooled front end to me. Do I
need to drain the oil to change the alternator or can I
get away with clamping the pipes instead. Even better
is it possible to just change the regulator pack on the
back with the alternator in-situ?
Please advise - Thanks!

The front end of the alternator is not "supplied" with vacuum, the vacuum pump, supplying vacuum to the brake servo, is mounted at the front of the alternator, in line, and driven by the same belt. There is no oil feed to the vacuum pump, one "port" is a vacuum feed to the brake servo etc and the other is the air outlet. There is a lot of information in the engine repair manual, Part No RM025E. No, the oil does not require draining for any work on the alternator. From the drawings, in the manual, it does look as if the regulator (Type CV,CT,CE) could be changed in situ (I have never done it so others might offer better guidance). However, the CM and CR type of alternator appear to have the regulator "built in" and would require the dismantling of the alternator.
