(Home) Electric passenger window failure

I have a Townace 2L TD - H Reg. A while back the passenger window became erratic and then failed. I had to pull the window closed. Although it didnt work I could live with that as I thought it might be the motor and couldn't afford another anyway. Things where fine for probably a year or so (unless you where a passenger who wanted to open the window!)

Yesterday for no apparent reason the window dropped 1/2 inch. I began to have a look at why this might be. The window seems solid enough and wont move at all. The mechanism seems well greased but I sprayed oil over it in case. The glass is firmly in its slot - but I can move nothing by hand.

I had a look a the electrics - The plug for the switch has five connections, two, two and one on its own in the middle. One set of two has 12v none of the others shows any power. By comparison I checked the volts on the driver side and couldn't find anything which really confused me! I have to say I don't really know what I'm doing round electricity. The driver window is fine, The passenger lock is off. I looked for fuses but couldn't find any for the windows and anyway I do seem to be getting 12v off two of the connections.

Does anyone have any idea what I could try next - Please??

Thank ian, I'm not really sure as I dont know if the motor is the problem and I'm not sure how to test for it.

If you're not quite sure about the wiring, get an auto spark to check it. The power gets to that window via the switches on the drivers door too, remember. The motor is easy to check. 12v to it one way round, then the other. Window should move both ways. If it doesn't, it's the motor. If it does, switch and wiring...

I had the Drivers Window motor fail on my townie, if you go down the breakers, most Toyota Window Motors are the same shape, the only thing that differs is the gearing (speed of window).

My came from a corolla, and fitted fine, little bit of a fiddle (siezed screw) but works fine now, just luve ALL the moving parts on re-assembly.

Thanks to all for your help. I think I'll get the connections checked properly next week when the garage is back at work and probably try ian's replacement. Ian, I tried to email you but it came back undelivered, could you drop me a line with details?

Thanks

Mike
