Electrical/alternator
Took my 85 Townace (2C) alternator out to work on vacuum pump. Now I have no ignition, indicators, wipers, only headlights and alternator light on dash. Is it possible because I didn't disconnect the battery I've blown something? All the fuses are OK.

Also, the vacuum pump. Does the oil feed lubricate the alternator bush? My vacuum pump hot so hot the O rings were non existent. The rear bush is shot so could this have caused the overheating?

Thanks

Yup, sounds like you've blown something. Probably not a fuse, more likely one of the fusible links. Check on the bulkhead behind the driver's seat, and beside the battery. My guess is either the AM1 or 2 link behind the seat.
The alternator doesn't have an oil feed as such, but some oil mist reaches it from the crankcase breather. Re your pump, it is possible that wear caused a degree of overheating, but I'd wonder if the opposite were the case. Is the shaft bent or missaligned? That could cause friction and overheating...

Thanks David
You mean the box with AM1 Glow Head AM2 written on it. Wondered what that was. I'll check them out What is a fusible link anyway and also where could one obtain a wiring diagram down under? Tried all the libraries with no luck.
The oil inlet is located under the alternator body yet the oil return is on the vacuum pump. To me it looks like the oil goes into a hole in the alternator bush then from there into the vacuum body. Both shaft and bush are rather slopped out and the vanes are quite worn indicating possible friction within.
I'll keep at it and hopefully work it out.
Thanks.

Les,
I took my alternator out on Saturday due low charge rate. The oil feed is to the vacuum pump bearings only. If the alternator is suspect or damaged, you may be better off getting a replacement unit. I tried BBC Spares today but unfortunately he's shut for three weeks. I'll refit my one in the mean time as it still works, only the charge rate is low.
My local repair man could not get parts for this Toyota Delco ALternator, so you have problems there too.

Ray, if he doesn't think he can get the parts (Jap market electrical parts CAN be different...) Find out what's needed, and get the toyota part no- post the parts and I'll look it up on the cd... Your man can then cross-reference that number, and should be OK!

yes kieth u do - take the 4 bolts off the seat - then the plate and centre console - takes about 15 minutes with practice

Hi

further to this discussion, please could someone point out specifically where the fusible links that might have blown in this instance are located?

I think I might have the same problem...

(Model-F)

Thanks very much!

Best wishes

Maria
