(Home) Fuel pump/fuel economy

My new 2C-T engine is chugging around nicely, but my economy is poor - 23MPG :-(

The fuel pump that came with the new engine has what my mechanic describes as "an extra loom" on it, and extra electronics compared to the previous pump. Does anyone know what this is for, and is it connected (sorry) to my poor fuel consumption?

Black sensor atop the throttle spindle? it's the TPS for the aircon, and I think, the EGR. The denso VE pump is fully mechanical, any electrical connections to it other than the stop solenoid are outputs rather than inputs.
23 is just on the low side of average, depending on your driving pattern. Has the injection timing of the new engine been checked, and does it look like any of the adjustments on the pump been disturbed?

Thanks David, I will report that back to my garage. My driving pattern has yet to be established in this vehicle, but at 23MPG I think it more likely to be of the "Mobile Traffic Obstruction" type, rather than my usual "Foot Hard Down" motoring. :-)

Fuel economy suffers greatly round town, even quite a hard motorway run is better than traffic crawling...
Some people get well over 30, but I'm still a bit of a "boy racer" and get 26-30 depending on circumstances
Pump timing is important, as is the condition of air and fuel filters, and the right grade of oil.

My garage gave me permission (still watching the new engine, worried that the Turbo might be blowing oil) to take the Townie to Inverness to get the in-laws (150 Mile round trip) and when I filled up in town I was getting 28MPG - not great, but much better! I have been following your advice to keep the revs below 2500,and Colin the Garage was quite positive about fitting an electric fan, so that is on the list now! Thanks again for all the help, David, and have a good Christmas.

Hi Tom and David,
It appears that your highway speed limits in the UK are a lot higher than the 100kph/65mph here in NZ?
I took my MasterAce for a shakedown run yesterday after changing engines(2C-T)and did 202kls(125.5 mls)on 15.73ltrs(3.46gals)=36.27 miles per gallon!
After reading your respective useages, your must be lead-footed!LOL;-)I suppose my average speed on this run was around 90/95kph as it included a bit of town-limit driving too!
Would you say the average over there is around 30mpg+?
Cheers,TAS.

Trev, our motorway limit is 70mph, and most people run at that or slightly above. Our towns could well be more congested too.
4x4 and auto reduce the mileage a fair bit, I've heard of 2wd manual townies approaching 40mpg. A 4x4 auto around town could drop as low as 22!
My lifetime best (4x4 auto) is just under 33 earlier this year, touring (gently) round the south of Ireland.

Thanks David,I thought the speed limit was higher as have seen on other threads that users are cruising on motorways at 95/100 mph!(They must have radar detectors installed)
Was forgetting that autos are a little hungrier than manual.I might be a little optimistic also as I haven't had my A/C system re-charged yet as this also uses a few HP!
My unit is shod with 205mm wide tyres on alloys which doesn't seem to be the norm, with 195's on most rigs here.I pumped them up to 33 psi after reading threads on forum, but thought ride was a bit bumpy?looks like a bit of experimenting coming up!Thank's again for your help, and hope you have a beaut festive season!(what's left of it).Cheers,TAS.

I have been driving with a feather on the accelerator, and have managed to get up to 28mpg on mixed running (4x4 Auto). I am doing my best to keep the revs below 2500, and I will probably get better than that on a good run. Strangely, after just local runs I was getting over 30mpg but that must be either because I measured it wrong (eg not properly reset trip clock) or, because we live in the back of beyond, the only thing that gets in our way is sheep and deer!
