(Home) Coolant leak near alternator

I have a mastersurfe ace 2ltr td auto with a coolant leak comming from a large nut (approx 26mm)which is located behind the altertor (thanks Ian dunse) This nut holds one pipe & what looks like a small breather pipe. I am at a loss to what this nut is for and if it is ok to tighten it or not.

any help much appreciated

I can't think what it is. Is it going into the block? If so I don't see why you shouldn't try tightening it. Although it may have a gasket or O ring behind it which could be the cause of the leak. Maybe David can shed some light on it as I know he's been working in that area a lot lately because of his turbo problems.

Nope, can't help there. The only hex- headed caps in that area are for oilways (banjo bolt for turbo feed)

How old is your townie, and is the nut you refer to on the head, block, or alternator?
(and we are talking about a 2C engine, yes?)

Ah OK, I had a shuftie at the cd, and the diagram for the block shows a screw plug c/w copper washer somewhere in the vacinity if the alt. (under?)
If that's it, you could probably nip it up a bit, but perhaps the washer has corroded?

right, looked again. it's the feed to the oil cooler and the turbo. (different section of the cd-sigh...)
anyway, it's a banjo and two copper washer setup .

I have a water leak on a Mastersurf ace 2lr diesel auto(1990). I cannot trace it a present but are suspect that it may be coming from somewhere behind the alternator. Is this possible and are there any water hoses behind the alt? There is very little room to work and I am not sure if the alternator is worth taking off. Is there another suspect area around this location on the engine?

I am very stuck with this. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I take it you haven't removed the floorpan yet. I'm afraid you will have to if you want to sort this out. There are a number of heater hoses in the alternator area, further up and running along the chassis. There is a T off to the filler pipe and then they run down to the rear heater matrix.

A pain to get to I'm afraid and ripe for corrosion due to their position. I've had a couple of leaks and replaced with a combination of heavy duty hose and 15mm yorkshire fittings,15mm copper pipe and jubilee clips.

I may have posted some photos on Ace Answers, if not I'll try and dig them out.

Good luck
