When the head was off, did the garage check thoroughly that all the waterways were clear, especially those small diagonal ones between the cylinders? The vehicle is a few years old (just like mine) and, over the years, a lot of debris does build up and these small orifices do get restricted, on any engine, not just ours. After the head fitting, was the coolant system, radiator etc, flushed thoroughly? Is the overheating due to the head or block anyway or, could there be another cause? Are checks now being done to see if the coolant system is being pressurised (by cylinder pressure)or that the thermostat is working correctly, or (if fitted) that the viscous fan is working ? There are many factors which can affect the coolant system on Townaces (see Ace Answers) and, for the high amount of money which you have paid, you should have received a very thorough, expert, and guaranteed job. A cracked block(cast iron) is, I think rare, a cracked head (aluminium)not so rare. Did the garage re-fill the system with an adequate mix of antifreeze/inhibitor? From your wording, it would appear that the job was done to overcome overheating anyway so, did the garage find the cause before fitting another head? If they did, how is there now a cracked block? Return the vehicle/job as unsatisfactory and contact your local Trading Standards office if it looks like there is going to be hassle.

got the same problem myself fitted a head 3 months ago fitted by a friend who is a qualified mechanic flushed the system out 3 times, changed the thermostat and added coolant 50/50 been fine till about a week ago(checked level every couple of days for first 4 - 6 weeks) didnt notice it boiling but stopped blowing hot air when stood idle and i have noticed a scraping sound now and then, water level was down as well so i,m changing water pump tomorrow hopefully this will sort it,but i know the water system is under a bit of pressure tried to take cap off 30-40 minutes after stopping (just after topping water up and driving 1/2 mile back home(live on a hill)).can anyone give any advise other than the dreaded head syndrome again?????????

yup, sounds like head unfortunately. Was a new rad cap fitted along with the head? And was the head skimmed before fitting? Did you replace the head bolts?
