(Home) Battery wiring overkill in Model F (Sp+)

Hi
I have a Space Cruiser Model F which has the usual non-starting winter battery. Turned out it was broken and I've got a replacement which I must refit myself.
There are the usual positive and negative wires, but also there is a clump of loose wiring (black and red) with various terminals! The person who removed the battery for me swears that the wires were connected by means of a connecter fastened on to each battery terminal. I cannot see where the other end of the wires possibly could go! I have no idea what to do with these wires...anyone tell me what they are for and how to refit them please?
If I refit the battery to the usual pos/neg wires without connecting these extra wires, what is going to happen?

Thanks!

Hi Maria, bit of a hard one to answer without actually seeing the problem/wiring, but I suggest this;
Connect the battery up as normal red to Pos(+), black to Neg(-), but don't connect the other wires that you mention. Make sure that you isolate them from each other & battery terminal posts i.e use insulating tape & keep all black wires on their own, do the same for the red wires.
Once you have done this, turn the ignition on & see which of your electrics don't work, will it even start?
Switch off ignition, remove key, then connect all the red wires to (+), and all the black wires to (-). This should sort you out.

Regards, Tony.

One - connection on left (front of vehicle side) with main battery clamp, and 3 on + side. Two are held in place on the clamp bolt the other being the main (thick) lead, and battery clamp, to the stater motor.
Yes I know one of (both?)the small leads are black and go on the red side. One also goes to the starter to power the connection that the thick one goes to, in tandem with the ignition starter switch. The other I can not remember. You may have more if you have a tow bar and electrics, or previous owner wired something else in!
Do the leads fall in a natural position for connection?

Thank you all for your kind help and advice. Unfortunately the replacement battery that was supplied was the wrong 'hand' and so when my other half (with no mechanical or electrical knowledge) tried to refit it ('putting it back in the way it came out') the terminals were connected the wrong way and I now have a burnt out ignition switch and possibly alternator.
Ho hum.

Thanks anyway!
