(Home) Acceleration poor, manual gear box better?

Hi,
My wife has a 1991 townace royal lounge 2l td with an auto box. She complains about the lack of acceleration from standstill particularly at junctions. As we are loathe to get rid of the 'bus' I was wondering about changing the auto box for a manual one. Is this a straight swap, does the box have to be from a townace or are there other (cheaper) ones that will fit and will this improve acceleration?

If she really wants to get away sharpish, tell her to run the engine up against the brake- hand or foot. Instead of standing on the pedal once the gap appears, hold the engine at about 1500rpm with the brake applied. This ensures that the turbo is on boost instantly. No higher, mind, or she'll get wheelspin (no, I'm not joking!!)

To swap gearboxes if you're so inclined means 'box, flywheel, pedal assy, and all the gearchange gubbins. Possibly rear mounting and propshaft too. Don't know about the diff ratios. Others that have done or contemplated the swap might help here...

you can also try turning the screw clockwise just above the 4 fuel pipes on the back end of the pump clockwise - no more than a quarter of a turn at a time - its a long stud with a locknut on - fuel economy might suffer a bit but its worth it
