In a recent thread I put forward a hypothesis relating to the cooling system, then in my quest for a greater understanding, and in part to confirm it, I promptly chanced upon an American site that explains how and why overheating can occur, and how to prevent it. Even if the root cause is an overworked engine, or inadequate cooling system such as we appear to have. (One familiar solution is to drill a hole in the thermostat )

For most experienced Townie owners they will already know what the cooling system is for, and how it works, so the first part may be a little condescending I'm afraid, but there is also a lot of technical information that supports much of our discussions and theories, and a large section on preventative maintenance.
