(Home) Which engine additives :wynn’s, prolong, duralube

In a long trip I noticed a small level drop in engine oil, accompanied by a stench at high speeds (105kph+), which I was then told it was the oil burning (!?!) From a friend’s tip I added a Winn’s engine oil treatment additive, which got away with the smell and the level drop. Then, I started to notice that there seem to be additives and conditioners for virtually everything (fuel, injectors, transmission , engine, etc), including this TV highly publicized Duralube stuff, which claims to be beyond everything else, as it treats the metal itself against friction, tear and wear etc.

As I had only been using fuel condition/injector cleaners, every 5k service, without much care on make or else, I wonder whether anyone out there is knowledgeable enough about additives, and which ones would be recommended for our “12 year old plus” townies and definitely the “do’s and don’ts”. I am particularly interested in views regarding this Duralube stuff, as there seem to be opposite forces out there <http://www.ftc.gov/opa/1999/9905/duralub2.htm>

Best thing I ever put in my Townie 2CT was Greased Lightning Engine Treatment; equivalent of Slik50 synthetic at about half the price. Cost about £15-16 at most UK motor factors, £11 if you buy it at Trago Mills (Newton Abbot) in the UK, although it's available world wide. Engine runs cooler, fuel consumption down (mpg up). Noticeable difference even when towing. I used to be sceptical about these PTFE treatments, but I was impressed with this.
