hi as a new owner of a masterace surf 4x4 auto 1992 model i am still wondering what half the switches do, so im hoping you all can help,firstly on the interior lights, mine has a map reading lamp in the center above the middle row of seats on the side of this is a rotary switch with a red led next to it if i turn this on it sort of squeels i can adjust the volume with another rotary switch next to it WHAT IS IT?
secondly how do you put it into low ratio on the gearbox as i dont seem to be able to move it,is there a sequence i should follow? and thirdly does anyone know of a good breakers yard for townace preferably in Lincolnshire as mine is damaged down the drivers side and i need trim and a door, lights etc

Sorry, not come across this interior light configuration before, you say it has map reading lights, I'm not aware of any Townie/Masterace having this above the middle row of seats, they usually have a standard festoon bulb unit, with a three position switch (off/door/on) or they have a flourescent lamp unit, again operated by the door, or the integral switch. As regards this unit having a sounder with a volume control, now you've really got me, do you have a digital camera? can you take a photo & post it on here, or e-mail it to me & I'll try to work out what this unit you have is. Regards putting it into low ratio, this is well covered on this Ace Answers website so go there & it will explain all about 4x4, low ratio & the lockable hubs. re. the switch, is this a post -92 facelift model, and does it have an electric moonroof?
The squeal is odd. not a PA system giving feedback by any chance?

Thanks for the replies i will try to photo the unit and post it on this site,or e-mail it,i should have mentioned that it also has a green lamp in it as well, i presumed this is some type of night light,unless anybody knows different as for it being a P A system I dont know but im off to have look thanks again for info

I think that Reg is still referring to the interior light Jim, not the one next to the ignition. Same logic likely to apply though. Bit like the residential, low power lights that sit alongside regular lighting perhaps. Bright idea? (groan).

after more investigations it says on this light unit
"pipoace" and has the words sens against one of the rotary switchs failing that does anyone know a short sighted jap who can test a few theories out,the log bookcame back today and says it was imported in 2001 but i beleive it to be a 1992 model even though the chassis no gives a date of manufacture of dec 1991
is this any help also the speedo is calibrated in mph and does not look like an after market fitment thanks againfor any ideas/help
