(Home) Front wheel bearings

help ??
i have a 2.2 auto diesel with a rubleing comeing from the front passenger side wheel we took the bearing out and it had a slight kink in it so put it all back together ordered the parts to do both sides
when they arrived i found there was the bearing which was the same as the old one but there was also a collar so can anyone tell me how to get this collar out and how hard is it to get the new one in hope you can help me you havent failed me yet thank you all

By collar do you mean the plastic oil seal that holds the inner bearing in the hub? Should be a push fit and be able to knock the old one out with a makeshift drift. Make sure you keep everything square and level when putting the new one in.

BTW I will need to do mine soon. Do you mind telling me how much you paid for the parts? What did you order, both bearings and seal for each side? New washers?

I have just been told that my front bearing is going..
The garage has quoted £65 per side fitted ?
sounds a good price !!

I wonder if anyone can advise re any "pre-load" figure for the front wheel bearings on a 4WD Masterace? There may not be a figure and it may be, as I have done, just an adjustment of the main hexagon nut to a "fairly" tight position and then the nut backed off one or two flats. I have tried Ace Answers and could not find any reference. If I missed any information, apologies for raising it here.
Thanks for any comment.

John

43 ft/lbs

Ian, are you sure about that? Sounds more like the figure for the locknut.

I always tightened the adjusting nut to seat the bearings and dislodge the grease, before slackening off and retightening finger tight. The action of putting the locknut on tightens the adjuster up the thread slightly anyway.
Taper rollers need a little play, otherwise the lubricant gets driven out and the bearing then overheats.

Yep 600kg - 43 ft/lb as per the manual. I've sent John the scans from the manual as I'm sure he's feeling indecisive now.

See AceAnswers transmission/4WD/"Hubs. Front wheel bearings & 4WD hub". There is a link in that thread to a web page about rebuilding the freewheeling hub. In the left margin, about halfway down, there's a further link for replacing the wheel bearing ...
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/wheel_bearing.html
... There you find a procedure using the 43ft-lbs but not for the final stage.
