(Home) What spares to keep on hand

I have just purchased a 2WD 91 townace TD with 42 000 KLMs on the clock from Perth Western Australia. As I live a couple of hours drive out of Perth could anyone suggest the spares that I should keep on hand as there would be delays sourcing them locally.
The website is excellent & I have paged through most of the information.

Thanks Neil

Headgasket & Head, but seriously, this is the only thing that fails on these vehicles. But obvious things such as OIL, OIL FILTER, AIR FILTER, FUEL FILTER, RADIATOR CAP & BRAKE PADS are the only consumables that you should think about keeping as a 'stock' item. HTH Rob.

Also, if you can get it in Australia, the splendid engine repair manual, part No RMO25E, stocked by Toyota dealers here in UK, and covering much more than just the engine, ie, altenator, starter, injection pump etc. Here it costs less than 10GBP and is worth every penny. Availability might be a problem though Neil, as others, from Aus and NZ, have sometimes asked for scans of various items in the book.

Carry a full set of fan belts and get breakdown cover. That way if a belt goes, call you friendly AA/RAC man and when he says "We don't carry belts for this" you can hand him them with a nasty grin on your face and the nastier thought in your head of "SUCKER". I've just adjusted mine and what a pain in the...... For what I consider to be a standard service item (belt adjustment should be check at EVERY service) it has to be the most stupid design I ever came across. What was wrong in putting another access panel under the drivers seat to access the adjuster instead of having to rip your cab apart.Belt adjustment is easier on a V12 jag unit shoe-horned into a moggy minor. So, the shrt vrsion is, carry a set of belts 'cause a lot of people really won't want to have to adjust these and that's aking for a snapped belt. Sorry if I've come across as naffed off but having JUST finished the job my forehead is bleeding from banging my head against the wall trying to understand Toyota design engineers, my hair's falling out, well, ripped out and I didn't have much to start with, and the dog's sussed out I want to kick him to relieve the stress and buggered off (no loyalty these animals). If I designed one of my companies products like that, I'd expect to out on my Arrr!!!! Now, where's that bloody dog....

Thanks Rob & John for the advice. I am trying to source a repair manual RM025E. The other parts are tracking down in Perth.
A question though if anyone knows the answer is Toyota imported a 89 model Tarago into Australia with a 1974cc diesel engine non turbo with a 4 speed automatic transmission. Is this the non turbo version of 2ct engine? If so this manual a lot easier for me to find. Again thanks for the info & the Townace drives excellent with our first trip down to Bussellton over the weekend.

If it's Toyota & 1974cc without a Turbo, I suspect it would be a 2C engine (2CT minus the turbo) minor differences engine wise, but the same basic unit, just less power & torque. As I unstood it, the Tarago was just the Australian version of the Previa/Lucida/Estima/Emina type vehicle, but is this one like a Townie/Masterace, or is it like the other vehicles. The latest Tarago is the same as the latest Previa over in UK. HTH Rob.

I think I've answered my own question, is the Tarago based on the Hiace van at this age? it looks like a stretched Hiace Super Custom was in the UK early 90's.

Toyota sold the Tarago in Aus from about 1982 to about 1990. This body style is exactly what I have in a 1990 MasterAce Surf. At about 1990 they changed to the Estima/Emina etc body style, but in a wide body. The Jap import ones of those look really skinny to me.
After 1990 Toyota sold the pre 1990 body as the Spacia.

Toyota Australia never sold a turbo Diesel Tarago, and as far as I know the non turbo diesel is a different engine - the one used in the early Hilux 4X4 diesel. I am also told it is absolute junk!

By the way Niel, whereabouts are you? I am in Perth (Hamilton Hill) and just love the SW.

My 88 Spacecruiser's handbook also had Tarago(Aus) in the title. I assumed it was the same body different name. Diesel was mentioned, but as far as I know no diesel Spacecruiser was sold in the UK (through Toyota). So if the Tarago looks similar to the Townace (roof will not be as high, front flatter and rear lights on the wings (UK model?)), manual may be ok. A 2C(T) may be fitted with a different layout and parts- alternator, A/C pump etc. so beware, it may only be the block thats is common.....
Two Townies close by, AceJam Aus on the way?

thanks rob, dave & clive for your comments.

for the australian model tarago go to www.redbook.com.au it gives very brief specifications & some pictures to compare with the models o/s go car values, select toyota, tarago 1989. then select the model with 2.0d. i telephoned local toyota dealer & yes it is the 2c repair manual approx au$40. the parts person was far more helpful when dealing with a australian model. i called previously & recieved an unhelpfull response. i have followed up a repair manual for that model tarago in a petrol edition to check out if the suspension, transmission, steering etc if details are the same. there are a couple of this model tarago's just down the road they look very simular to mine.
the townace is going very well indeed an excellent mpv for the family. i have changed the engine & transmission oils the transmission oil was very brown. changing oil as per this site. info was very useful.
i will get those belts dave & have them in the car as we are in the racwa. we had some problems insuring the car could only find racwa to cover us how about you? yes i do in the wonderful southwest of wa in eaton just north of bunbury just off the collie river. great little spot, close to the sw vineyards. would have to be one the best spots i've lived in after the kimberleys.
there are a few townaces down this way just recently.they are popular & very good value for money. the importers must have brought quite a few in before the government tries to regulate them. i will drop by again ina couple of days. again thanks all for your help. the site is of great assistance
regards neil

Niel,

I know Eaton, or at least the area.

Let's face it, anywhere outside of Perth is great (Perth is great too, for the rest of you guys, but S\W is better).

I had no problems with insurance - NCUIS through Energy Credit - they called it a Tarago X-Tra Trac, varied the engine to TD, and made it top spec. Not even really expensive. I made sure that they knew it was a jap import, but they didn't seem worried about it.

Dave.
