(Home) Replacing rear brake shoes

Hi;
I wanted to check the rear brake pads on our MasterAce but on removing the rear wheel I could not get the drum off. I noticed a square protrusion on the drum which looked as if it has a lip on it. I assumed (wrongly) that it may be something that you could remove to check the linings so I gently tapped it. Unfortunately it broke off! Does anyone have any ideas what it does (did!) and what can I do to remove the drum?
Any help greatfully accepted.
Thanks.
Terry Davies.

Not sure what you broke off, a balancing weight perhaps?, but to extract the drum, screw an M8 bolt into the tapped hole near the wheel studs

Terry,
Dave's advice, as usual, spot on. I would add that I have just done my Masterace rear brakes but, when I had the drums off few weeks ago to inspect them, I had the same problem as you. A gentle tap, as well as the extraction bolt, around the rim of the drum, breaks the "bind" between the drum and the flange. A smear of grease, on the flange, will make it easier to get the drum off next time.
I fitted the Bluprint replacement shoes, part No ADT34108AF, exceptionally good value at £22 plus Vat for both wheel sets. If you have a leaking wheel cylinder, the complete set of seals (both sides) from Toyota, part No T04906-30080, is only £8.74 plus vat, again, good value.
