(Home) Compass and clinometer

Neither the compass or the clinometer actually move on my beastie and neither is backlit with headlights on, is there a link??
The clinometer is identical to the one fitted to my Sportrak and that is sufficiently sensitive to notice uneven tyre pressures..........well almost

The unit seems easy enough to remove, is it worth it can anything be done?? either from intricate servicing or light to moderate thumping. Neither of the adjuster screws for the compass achieve anything either...........are they destined to remain as ornaments??

Cheers

George

Snap!

My compass has never been accurate despite lengthy attempts to align it. It's linked to the plastic mounting on the roof behind the driver's cockpit. Other's have laboured long on this and it's all on AceAnswers. You may get lucky.

As for the clinometer, mine became "unhinged" last summer. When you strip it down, you find it is a plastic ball within a plastic ball, separated by a film of transparent oil. I believe the inner ball with the scale should be held in place by some form of peg. This obviously broke on mine causing the ball to rotate horizontally as opposed to vertically within the scale's limits. I attempted a fix by inserting a new peg thru the outer ball, sealed with araldite but to no avail. It is now stuck. Shame really because it was very effective when it worked. So in my case they are destined to be ornaments.

It might be worth you stripping both down and cleaning them up. It may dislodge something or clear a blockage. Worth a try.

Good luck.

I've had mine apart and they both work. As far as I know the clinometer is self-contained and mechanical but the compass is an electronic indicator for a sensor in the bulge in the middle of the roof lining.

So no backlighting suggests the wiring is not connected which would explain why the compass doesn't move but would leave Ian's explanation for the sticking clinometer.

It's easy to open up. you may find someone has dislodged the connector. If so move on to Ace Answers for how to try to adjust the compass.

Thanks Dave, I forget to cover the electrics. Yes it's easy to get into - 2 visible screws, 2 further screws then remove the individual components from the mount. Wires are all exposed and you can work on them in comfort (makes a change for these vehicles).

A further note, take care not to break the adjusters on the compass. As for the clinometer, it could be that the peg has somehow got wedged and the ball can be dislodged by shaking. Could also be a case of lost fluid, this would require opening the plastic seal, fixing the leak and replacing with what? Could be petroleum BP, presumably something with a low viscosity.

Thanks Guys, clinometer is now free and moving according to vehicle angle. The compass however remains stubbornly pointing south, the multiconncector was removed and contacts cleaned, to no avail. I will check feed to it later this weekend.

What is inside the truncated pyramid? and how do you prise it off

Didn't get that far George, didn't want to spoil the headlining. If you gaffer it I'd be pleased to hear how
