(Home) Rough idle at start

I was sure I had seen some talk about this problem, but can't seem to find it now. Sorry if this is a repeat.

My MasterAce Surf 2CT has just started to cause starting problems.
When first starting the engine from stone cold it Idles so rough that it stalls.
It took about 12 goes to get it to keep running for more than about 5 seconds.
After that it started rough, settled down came up to about 800 rpm idle, and is then perfect, until the next cold start. Warm starts are perfect.

We have had our first 'cold' mornings here in Perth WA since I bought the car, and the problem has just started (no pun intended). (Note
cold morning in Perth in late summer is about 8 degrees C - aren't you jealous?)

Any suggestions?

(It is an auto, but I am sure this is an angine problem alone.)

Well, either the glowplugs aren't operating correctly, or you've an air leak in the fuel system- slack filter perhaps?

Hello Dave

Re Cold starting problems in Perth. My Car has an extended timer installed on it from the I think owner in Japan. It gives the electronic tone when a minute is up. Maybe cold starts maybe problem. Mine is kept in a garage overnight & so far I have not encountered this problem. I think Dave Millar is on the right track with his suggestions. I did however run through some injector cleaner which seemed to help the engine run smoother. By the way how does your 4X4 Masterace handle the sand driving.

G'Day Neil.

I was considering some injector cleaner before I go looking for the plugs - that could be expensive I guess.
What brand of cleaner did you use?

As for the sand, we haven't run it on the beach yet, but on sand tracks around the Augusta area it surprised me.
It is Auto which helps a lot, and they do have dual range. My past experience has taught me to drop to low range as soon as you get into sand - no point overstressing if you don't have to - but it seems to go well in high or low.

We tackled some reasonably steep tracks which were both soft and stepped (alternative dips due to people ripping up and spinning the wheels) and it just seems to keep going.
In fact it was only my courage which held us back.
As we were alone, and the first time out in this car, we were pretty conservative, but when we turned around to go back we reaslised we could have gone a lot further.

I can't wait to get out with some friends and really test it - without scratching it I might add!

Well, as soon as I posted the message it stopped.

I haven't had any problem since the last post - maybe a fuel blockage?

Anyway, thanks for the reply!

And by the way, Have any of you, ANYWHERE been watching the cricket? I have been enjoying it immensely!

Hello Dave

I used Wynns deisel injector cleaner on my 91 Masterace.
Had a cooling problem but fortunately caught it before any damage was done. The radiator blew a core in the recent hot weather in the SW of WA but fortunately was on a very short trip & noticed it in my home garage straight away with no rise on the temperature indicator. I am having the radiator recored with heavy duty cores will pickup today & fit tonight. All this just out of warranty wouldn't you know it!!!!
So beware these faults can appear just like postings on the BoK.
Also the BoK help a lot in the procedure to remove seats etc to get at it.
My relatives have a house down there in Augusta on Malloy island. Its a very beautiful area & we will make some more visits down there as only an hour from Bunbury.

I was interested in the sand handling of the masterace as I have had a lot of driving the Tojo's ( landcruisers) up north & wondered how they went. Get yourself a snatch n' strap they are invaluable when you become bogged & there is another vehivle to pull you out. Must go . Regards Neil

I have seen a snatch strap in action - truly incredible.
It is definitely on my list, and also a hand winch, when I can afford them.
The combination of these two together can get you out of just about anything. The hand winch is a lot of work but much cheaper, and that is important at the moment.
Attach the winch to the snatch strap, with plenty of slack in cable, and start winching. eventually the tension in the strap just drags you out.
Not as impressive as another car ripping you out of the bog, but just as effective.

I hope to go out with the guys from the Perth branch of the AussiSurfOwners site late in the month, so I will let you know how it goes then.

Our holiday just after Christmas was to the Molloy Caravan Park, just over the river from the island.
It's a nice place to stay, but we couldn't get on the island of course.(For the rest of you, it is restricted to property owners and relatives only - strict controls on what you can do there, trying to live in harmony with the environment.)
