Jane,
Mine failed mot this time for the same reason.
No light other than white are allowed to the front (sidelights).
My mot was with a neighbour who has a garage.

What I did to fix was wire the orange lamps to the exsisting flasher lamps.
Also not part of the mot but I wired the white side lamps from the flasher to work as sidelamps.
In japan I believe the white side ones came on with the flashers to light up going around a corner.

They're WRONG, ask them if they would have the audacity to fail a NEW shape Range Rover, or a Volvo S40, V40, S 70, V 70, they all have forward facing amber marker lights, they are NOT illegal, they are not sidelights, they are marker lights. Go back to the MOTer & have a chat with him. HTH Rob.

Good point Rob, If white lights are the only ones there is also a lot of trucks out there with illegal lights too

I'll have a word with someone tonight about it

The Department of Transport have an advice line, 0845 600 5977
The advise they give is that the minimum legal requirement is for side lights and head lights, (main and dipped beam). Provided that these are white, they will conform to the MOT.

The yellow fog lights fitted to the townace etc, are classified as “additional lights” and are not subject to MOT testing. Therefore the colour is irrelevant.

It is possible to complain if you feel your car has unjustly failed its MOT. The garage that failed it should have given you a failure certificate. On it you should find a complaints number. Complain now, and next year it will pass the test with yellow lights

Hope this helps

Where can I acquire some sidelight spares for the Toyota Master Ace Surf or is there a similar sidelight spare on another van model which I do not know about?
